Philip Zimbardo is worried about the future of men.
In his Ted talk, Philip Zimbardo claims that “Guys would rather be in a bar with strangers…rather than have Jennifer Lopez totally naked in their bedroom.”
Then he goes on to say that men need ever-increasing novel stimulation, constant change and newness for arousal. Doesn’t this contradict his theory that guys prefer being in pubs with guys than in bed with hot chicks?
Watch this clip of Zimbardo’s TED talk called “The Demise of Guys” and tell us if you think he’s on to something or if he’s got guys all wrong.

I think it’s crucially important that Zimbardo established his career through a profoundly unethical study: soaked in homophobia. As his prison experiment study grew out of control, he basked in the power that he absorbed from it, as the ‘prison warden.’ It took a woman to point out the absurd abuse he was bringing upon his poor Standford Students. He has been struggling to justify his actions ever since. Zimbardo is way of out of his league on this topic. He’s profoundly ill-informed. I can’t judge the entire talk from this clip, but there was enough failure to engage with… Read more »
Well said.
What a load of rubbish hat was from someone who is meant to be a leading academic. He starts off with his education argument- but doesn’t talk about how girls are socialised into a form of femininity that matches the requirements of educational institutions, to accept dominance, be quiet and always avoid conflict. Hence why boys drop out more, have lower grades and diagnosed with ADHD at higher rates. Then he talks about men not being able to talk to women and emotionally connect with them. YEAH because before the computer age men were all about the emotional intimacy with… Read more »
Well, you don’t draw a big audience by announcing that men AREN’T in a crisis.
Nor do you get page hits. I support the Good Men Project, but I feel this video was posted to push buttons, and get page hits, and the part of my comment above that criticized this was removed. C’mon guys, you can do better than this – you could have had something substantial here.
I agree that more young men have a hard time conversing with women, but as this site points out — http://jseliger.com/2011/08/16/philip-zimbardo-and-the-ever-changing-dynamics-of-sexual-politics/— “Most women under the age of 30 will not answer phone calls any more and will only communicate with men via text. If I were on the market, I would find this profoundly annoying, but it’s true. Many women, at least in college, make themselves chiefly available for sex after drinking heavily at parties; this contributes to perceived problems noted by Zimbardo, instead of alleviating them.”
So, perhaps we’re all guilty…
What the heck? What is wrong with guys hanging out with guys? I fully support the ability of men to form friendships with other men, it’s healthy and it’s nice to know they can hang out with men without being called gay. Much of his talk about technology and isolation is not gender-specific though, it’s generation specific. It’s still a problem, but it seems unfair to place all of that on boys. The porn stuff was sort of depressing, but I mean… I had messed up ideas of what sex/making love was when I was growing up and that was… Read more »
Couldn’t agree more with you!!
In his Ted talk, Philip Zimbardo claims that “Guys would rather be in a bar with strangers…rather than have Jennifer Lopez totally naked in their bedroom.”
What on earth is his source for this? Personally, I hate football, so I’ll be in the next room with Jennifer.
It occurs to me that men and women are in a constant state of crisis over one thing or another, according to the MSM and the not-so-MSM.
Yeah, I hope he was being absurd on purpose. Most men would choose an attractive woman over the Super Bowl. Add to that the fact that Zimbardo just assumes that this attractive woman can be bedded with no work on our part. Having to jump through hoops to make something happen is part of what keeps men in their bubble.
I do accept the argument that more and more young men have a hard time conversing with young women though.
He starts well, pointing out that boys face worse outcomes than girls in various areas (high school drop-out chance, college, graduate school, etc). He even mentions that boys are 5 times more likely than girls to be victims of state-sponsored forced administration of Ritalin and amphetamine. So far, so good. Than, the colossal clown claims that all of these symptoms are caused because boys are afraid of women?!? Typical white-knight feminist who symply cannot understand that staying away from women is the ONLY thing that boys are doing that is wise and good. Then, the clown goes on to say… Read more »
This website is supposed to be about men, and that kind of conspiratorial misogyny just makes it all about women.
