Same-Sex Marriage Bill Passes Lower House of French Parliament

Same-sex marriage is gaining ground in the French Parliament.

The controversial bill to legalize gay marriage has passed the lower house of Parliament in France. The bill also allows same-sex couples to adopt. The Socialist Party of President François Hollande was instrumental in pushing the bill, which passed with a vote of 329 to 229, through the national assembly. The Guardian reports that after passing in the lower house, the bill will now go to the senate, which is also controlled by the Socialists and their allies, for a vote.

Although there have been several large protests and demonstrations in Paris by those in opposition to the legislation, polls show that most French citizens support the legalization of gay marriage. However, when the issue of same-sex couples adopting is added to the debate the support drops significantly.
