Syrian Activist Released From Prison

Anderson Cooper says, “Imagine, a grown adult hearing his voice for the very first time.”

Three weeks ago Syrian activist Zaidoun Alzoabi and his brother Sohab were arrested by the Syrian secret police and held in an undisclosed location. As Anderson Cooper of CNN reports, Alzoabi was released this last week and has been reunited with his family.

For more than a year Alzoabi has spoken out against the regime of Bashar Al-Assad, the Syrian dictator. Using his real name, Alzoabi has talked openly about the crimes the regime has committed in his country. When Anderson Cooper asked why he was willing to use his own name and risk being imprisioned or even killed Alzoabi said,

When I chant “I want freedom,” I can hear my voice for the first time in my life. Now how can I give up this, even if it costs me my life?

Although Zaidoun Alzoabi has been released, his brother Sohab, who he says was last seen 8 days ago and was in “good spirits”, is still being held.
