Yesterday, Hawaii legalized same-sex civil unions, making it the sixth state (plus the District of Columbia) to do so. It’s a nice cap to a week that saw two inspirational videos defending gay marriage pop up on the intertubes.
First, there was Jean, the 80-year-old Iowa grandma. Inspired by Zach Wahls’ speech on the floor of the Iowa House, Jean defends her gay son and scolds—as only a grandma can do—gay marriage opponents. She speaks of coming to terms with her son’s sexual orientation, but really, coming to terms with herself and her views. Check her out:
Then there’s this video of a Mormon women, “Mel,” who originally uploaded this clip in 2008, but was forced to remove it to protect her reputation in the Mormon church. This week, though, she re-posted the video in honor of Valentine’s Day and the legend that goes along with it.
