We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aid, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn.
—Henry David Thoreau
How do you relate to the environment you live in? What appreciation of the flow of nature do you have? Does the idea of reawakening to the dawn mean anything to you? Can it lead you to your amazing self?
I see the dawn as full of hope, full of silence. For me, it is when nothing happens and yet everything explodes. I used to live in Scotland, and I loved camping in the Scottish Mountains. When I slept in a tent, I saw how light shifted in quality. I saw light change when it first glowed through the tent. I found this the most exciting part of the day.
This shift in the quality of light preceded the dawn. I noticed this and so did others. The light shifted—insects, birds, and animals started another cycle of life, another awakening. They reacted to it showing that the dawn was an intimate part of their day. Can you to see the dawn as an intimate part of your day, an intimate part of your life? The dawn melts the cold of night. It brings the light and fills the darkness.
As the New Year approaches I like to re-assess my life and make commitments on how I am going to live in the future. I like to look at this as an opportunity to look inside myself and see what is there. In the same way the dawn brings back life to the earth I think of the New Year as bringing back my essential nature to me. The commitments I make I see as re-invigorating who I am inside. They are re-commitments to the me that I hide away in the natural course of life.
Modern society has shifted the natural rhythms of the body to fit with its perceived needs. I use artificial light to lengthen my days and allow me to live as I want, not as nature intended. I no longer allow the flow of natural light to trigger my physical responses and take me through life. I like to control my life.
This has been key to my life over the past 40 years. I was a lighting designer and created amazing environments for people to work and play in and for people to enjoy. The work I did enabled people to do what they wanted in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. In doing this I sought to use light to tap into people’s emotions. This worked well whether I was working in a cathedral, a museum, an office or in someone’s home.
I am not recanting the work I did or even saying that it has a negative effect. What I am saying is that it has increasingly allowed people to become separated from the world they live in. It has encouraged people to live in a bubble that they help to create.
There is a natural flow to life that is about more than light and dark, about more than the obvious. There is a flow that is seen in the subtlety of nature, of the universe. It comes out when people reawaken to the dawn.
The play of energy that people live amongst is not noticed by many and yet it powerfully affects their lives. For example the polarity between male and female energy affects not just relationships but also the balance of power in our cultures. Whilst many people see a battle between the sexes, I see a constantly shifting flow of energy.
The influence of spiritual energy in life goes far beyond concepts of religion. Your expectations in life, the way you manifest the life you lead is closely intertwined with the spiritual energy that flows through and around you.
When you allow yourself to sense the subtle shifts of natural light you slowly re-connect with nature. As you allow this connection to grow within you, you become increasingly aware of the amazing potential in the world.
When you insulate yourself from nature’s natural rhythms you also insulate yourself from the energy of the universe. When you close yourself off into an unnatural world you close yourself off from the opportunities presented by the universe and the spiritual energy that flows through it.
This process needs time to grow, but as you trust it becomes extremely powerful in your life. It is the re-awakening of your spirit and your soul that will transform you and transform society. This re-awakening, however, has to come from within, from a sincere desire to re-connect with your core, with the source of your life.
As you feel the subtlety of the approach of the dawn, as you become able to sense the imperceptible shifts in natural light, then can you truly become aware of the energy of the universe, then can you reawaken to the dawn. As this energy becomes real to you, you become more conscious of your role in life.
As you do this I believe that you will stand in the world with the chaos and the demands of life flowing around you. You will no longer control others, but you will control yourself. You will be yourself. You will understand yourself, accept yourself, and live your authentic life. You will appreciate who you are.
Then you will be able to expect amazing things for yourself and society. In the New Year you will be able to re-commit to yourself and to your life.
