Your spouse should be your best friend, and if you are lucky enough to find a partner who you are also running a business with, that’s awesome! The lines of work and personal life can sometimes get crossed; however, many couples who work together find themselves arguing more than usual due to the extra workload. If you want to avoid this and excel in ALL areas with your other half, here are some recommendations to incorporate into your relationship.
1. Be productive in your work
If you are organized and work as a team in the different projects you need to complete, there is going to be fewer arguments which makes for a happier business and home life. It’s crucial that you each have your tasks and responsibilities, ones in which shows off your strengths. Both roles are essential to the business, and neither of you should have an ego more prominent than the other. Although you should be working together, working separately in different areas of the business allows you to have some breathing space, which is essential for everyone from time to time. At the start of each day, you should both make yourself a “to do” list and make sure that you complete all tasks. It is so important that you both have trust in each other in your business, just like you do in your relationship. Don’t interfere in each others work and don’t be on the attack when small things go wrong. Businesses are not easy so make sure that you are prepared for the roller-coaster. Communicate when things are not so good but also be positive and celebrate together when things are great.
2. Have a “Clocking off Time”
The trouble with running your own business is that it’s hard to know when to turn off your “work brain” for the day and when it’s time to enjoy one another as husband and wife. When you have a 9-5 job, you have your set hours that you work, but this doesn’t apply when partners are entrepreneurs trying to build a successful business together.
At some point, it’s important to finish work for the day and transition in family time. Make it a rule that states there is no work-related talk or activities at certain times. Stick to that rule and enjoy your family’s company during that time. This process will make for a happier home because you are not bringing home work-related stress.
3. Enjoy regular date nights
Working with your spouse can mean you don’t have much time to go out anymore and especially go on dates like you would when you first got together. This is important in ALL relationships, especially ones where you have the extra burden of working together also. If you aren’t spending time together outside of work, you will start to take each other for granted, and you might begin to see each other as just work colleagues. Try and enjoy at least one date night/day a week and go anywhere that you can to get away from where you usually work. Staying overnight in a new place is even better if you can afford to do this and it will also give your brains a chance to recharge from work. Make sure that whenever you are on your date, you stay clear of all conversation to do with your business. Take the time to be affectionate with each other, talk, laugh and do all those things that couples do!
A working relationship with your spouse could be a huge success. After all, you must work great together as a team to be in a relationship in the first place. However, this is only providing that you see a distinction in both types of relationships and you communicate appropriately in all areas of your life. You need to know when it’s time to stop working for the day and spend some time together as a romantic couple to help keep that spark alive. Following the tips have been mentioned guarantee a long-lasting relationship in both your work and romantic life.
