Men, it’s tough to admit we need help at times, as our pride can keep us going on pure adrenaline at times. Sometimes it can seem like we are under a lot of pressure to keep it all together, and it can weigh on us. About 6 months ago I learned how easy it can be to seek help and how getting help can have a huge impact on every part of your life. Getting help can allow you to start enjoying moments that used to devastate you and/or the people around you.
When I finally admitted I needed some help dealing with a traumatic incident that I dealt with over 20 years ago, my life drastically changed, almost immediately. I’m writing this article for one reason, and that is that I want to let you know how getting help can have the same transformational impact on your life as well if you take that first step. There are tons of reasons we all need help, and it truly takes courage to take that first step. It took me over 20 years to make that initial phone call, but it has turned out to be life transforming for me. I think it can have the same impact for many other guys out there.
Here are 3 reasons you should get help, and 3 areas of your life that will immediately be transformed.
3 Reasons to Get Help
1. Release Your Tension
No matter what your situation is, if you are withholding your sometimes aggravated feelings and thoughts inside, you have unwanted tension building up within you. The longer you hold on to your aggravation, your tension builds like a pressure cooker. You may feel like exploding at the smallest thing that you don’t like, and God help the people who are around you when that happens. Being proactive and seeking help allows you to release the tension pressure that is building up.
2. Reduce Stress
Much like the tension that is building, if you refuse to get help your stress level builds and detrimentally impacts your overall health. Signs of stress vary but may include a short-temper and anger (which was my case). There are numerous ways to relieve your stress, but when you do so in a controlled environment, you can not only relieve your stress, you can learn how to control stress when it comes on.
3. Minimize Conflict
Conflict can be a productivity killer in every area of your life, and if not proactively managed can destroy your career and home life. When you seek help to control whatever may be a little off in your life or just talk about it with somebody, you can begin to minimize the internal conflict your have fighting inside you. That can help you deal with the everyday conflict in your life by allowing you to process things with a clear mind.
3 Areas of Transformation
1. Relationships
Your relationships will be the first things you notice improve, whether it’s with your wife and kids, or your professional relationships at work, or your friends and family. When you are getting help with your personal issues, you no longer have them hanging over your head when you are with other people, and you can now have great conversations that are encouraging for everyone.
2. Mindset
You will also start to feel your mindset change as you get help with your personal issues, because instead of feeling like things are weighing you down, you are now free to think about the things you really love. As your mindset changes, your entire attitude and behavior changes as well, and you’ll enjoy your days again.
3. Confidence
As you begin to work through your issues with the help of somebody else, your confidence in yourself grows, which in turn, instantly boosts your confidence in many other areas of your life. You no longer feel like you are fighting a battle every day, and now you can approach things knowing you can handle yourself and whatever the outcome is.
I’d like to challenge you all to think about anything that is bothering you or anything that may be impacting other areas of your life negatively. Then, I encourage you to pick up the phone and make an appointment to see your family doctor. Yep, it’s that easy! Your family doctor is a great place to start your path to transformation. He/she can talk to you and determine if you need additional help with your specific challenge. Believe me, it took me over 20 years to make the call, so I know it can be intimidating. However, it will change your life!
