Dear Son,
I have one life lesson I would like to pass on to you. This is the life lesson I wish my parents would have given me because it would have made my life so much easier, fuller, and better. This life lesson is – be true to yourself. No matter what, do what you feel is right for you. Listen to your heart and your soul because that is where your true self is and where it will “talk” to you. As long as you do that, you will lead a fulfilled life and the life you were meant to live.
Each of us has a purpose on this earth and some search their entire life looking for it, because they were not true to themselves early on and didn’t listen to their inner voice. This voice is inside you and it is telling you what you need to do with your life. Do not get distracted by others telling you what you should do with your life. Do not get distracted by love, sex, society, friends, your brother, power, money or even your parents. All of these things are in your life to test your resolve and see if you have what it takes to be your authentic self.
It may be hard to resist other’s advice or persuasion to do something other than what you think you should do, but DO resist! It may be difficult at first, you may be afraid of disappointing others, you may feel as if they might know better, but they don’t. Don’t be afraid of disappointing others. That is so much easier in the long run than disappointing yourself. Don’t have a life where you regret your decisions to do what you wanted to do and then try to make it right later on. Because believe me, it is much easier to fail when you are 20 or 25 than when you are 40 or 50. By then you won’t know who you are anymore or have a family.
You will not be as free to take chances to try something new. But when you are young, you have every right to do what you need to do to make yourself happy. But this happiness is not superficial. It’s not the same kind of happiness as when you do something fun or buy something new. It’s a deep satisfaction that you are doing what is best for you and makes you feel alive and with purpose. If you don’t live your true life, you will end up looking for it for the rest of your life and will always feel a hollowness, an emptiness and void that can never be filled no matter what you do.
Some people end up trying to fill that void with alcohol, drugs, money, gambling, food or other destructive behavior because they feel so empty inside and without a purpose. They want that emptiness to go away, so they will try anything. They stopped listening to their hearts and souls and started to believe they couldn’t live their authentic self because of some stupid reason such as they were not smart enough, didn’t have enough money or were too old to do what they truly wanted to do. But never let that be you! Never let someone dissuade you from leading your authentic life no matter how different it may be from your parent’s or friend’s lives. You have ONE life to live, let it be YOURS!
This is my life lesson for you. I love you with all my heart and I know you will live a truly glorious life if you follow this one piece of advice.
