Part of me wants to say “thank you” for giving me the incredible blessing of being this little girls daddy…. but I can’t, because I know that this residual pain and questioning will eventually come up. I’ve counseled enough teenage girls and adult women to know that it always comes up.
But know this: this little girl is as much mine as my biological son and, in 2 months, she will have my last name. And when the adoption paperwork pushes through, there will be no question.
I show up every day to push myself, because she needs and deserves me to be the man that shows her what strength looks like; what a man looks like; what a father looks like….. to hold her up emotionally and physically. She needs to know she’s chosen, valued, worthy and protected every single day, and it will be one of the greatest honors of my life.
Emie,
I prayed for you before I knew you. I prayed for you before I knew your mom. I always knew I’d have a little girl and her name would be Emie Lou. You calling me Daddy is one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever been given.
I choose you. Every day, I choose you. Thank you for choosing me.
