Mouth Breathing Complications and Treatments
Breathing is something that we all take for granted and is something we don’t even think about unless a problem arises. People should try to breathe through the nose rather than the mouth. Some people develop a habit of sleeping with an open mouth, which exacerbates the problem and can leave you with problems such as a dry mouth, loss of voice, and sore throat, amongst other complications.
One of the problems that can affect those that breathe through the mouth rather than the nose is snoring. While this may not seem like a major problem, it can affect you and even others in various ways. It can have an impact upon your sleep quality as well as on the sleep quality of those sharing the bed or room with you.
Other Complications Linked to Mouth Breathing
There are various other complications that can arise from mouth breathing rather than nose breathing. The treatments can vary based on the problems that arise. In addition, it is important to look at the root cause of mouth breathing – for instance, some people may breathe through the mouth due to nasal problems that make it difficult to breathe through the nose. In instances such as these, it is important for the root cause to be identified so your breathing can be properly addressed otherwise the problem will continue over the long term.
Some of the complications and problems that can arise as a result of mouth breathing include:
- Feeling hoarse
- Bad breath
- Sore throat and dryness
- Snoring problems
- Lack of sleep
- Negative effects on concentration and mood
- Dark circles and puffiness under the eyes
- Fatigue and lack of energy
All of these problems can have a profound impact on your day to day life, which is why it is important to seek help in order to deal with mouth breathing problems. Of course, we all breathe through the mouth rather than the nose from time to time, such as when we have a bad cold. However, if this is something you are doing on a regular basis, it is important to get the necessary treatment to help alleviate the problem.
The key to getting the right treatment for mouth breathing and the complications that can arise from it is to identify the cause. If mouth breathing is something you do on a regular basis rather than on occasion, seeing an expert will enable you to determine the cause of the issue. This could be anything from sinus infections and congestion through to a deviated septum, obstructive sleep apnea, or even the shape of the nose. By finding out what is causing the problem, you can then address the issue more effectively.
