The productivity and overall success of businesses are directly related to the health and well-being of their staff. So, it’s crucial for every organization to promote and support a healthy and safe workplace. Obviously, the employees themselves should do their best to practice a healthy lifestyle even when they are at work. The following is a list of tips that can help both business owners and employees promote workplace health and wellness.
Creating a clean and neat atmosphere
If the workplace is well-organized and clean, the organization will boost its productivity. But, what is even more important is that employees will become healthier and happier. The basic organizational and some cleaning activities are usually left to employees. For instance, every employee should de-clutter his or her desk from unnecessary things. However, the business should have a housekeeping provider to create a pleasant and clean atmosphere at the workplace. Everything in the offices must be cleaned and dusted on a regular basis. Let’s not forget the cafeterias and kitchens where many germs can start thriving in case these areas left messy and dirty. As an employee, always check the food expiry date and watch for your hygiene.
Setting the perfect temperature
A few scientific studies have confirmed that inadequate level of temperature can have a negative impact on the health of employees. A basic rule is to set a temperature that will make people inside feel comfortable when they are wearing normal clothing. In other words, no one should feel too warm or too cold inside. Generally speaking, the ideal temperature is between 73 and 79 F during the summer period and between 68 and 74 F in winter.
Improving indoor air quality
Contrary to popular belief, there are actually many indoor working environments that are polluted more compared to outdoor areas. Needless to say, continuous exposure to poor indoor air can lead to serious health consequences. There are many things that people can do to improve the quality of indoor air at the workplace. For instance, they can follow the smoking policy strictly. They can get rid of the garbage in a timely manner. Furthermore, they should avoid blocking air grilles and/or vents. Finally, they can open the windows from time to time and allow fresh air to enter the building.
Many people would say that drug use or drug abuse is a matter of personal choice, but every company has a responsibility to ensure that their employees are not using drugs while they are working. This is the reason why many organizations are practicing random drug testing. The company doesn’t inform their employees about these tests in order to get relevant results. Of course, there are some other types of drug testing like pre-employment and post-accident testing. Each of these tests can help the company, but it can also help the employees.
We hope that these simple tips will help managers and employees improve their health and wellbeing at the workplace.
