Among esthetic procedures, injectable dermal fillers rank among the most frequently provided solutions. While the common knowledge about botox (as the other hugely popular injectable treatment), is usually quite sound, fillers are offered by a large number of different companies. And – to make matters worse – even within each filler brand, these companies offer different types with multiple attractive, but utterly non-explanatory names.
This, of course, leads to a lot of confusion and insecurities on the side of the potential customer.
Sadly, attractive branding still trumps clarity when it comes to dermal fillers. For this reason, potential patients should get a basic understanding of the different properties and indications for fillers.
Traditionally, the differences among dermal fillers are explained by their chemical composition and texture, but that will not help most people who are otherwise unfamiliar with the topic. A more appropriate way of explaining dermal fillers in an easy way, is by looking at, which properties a facial filler should display, to treat the most classic problems and areas of the face.
“My face appears sunken in, especially the cheeks”
The reason for this unwanted sign of an aging face is the age-related loss and disadvantageous redistribution of subcutaneous facial fat (Lipoatrophy), which also leads to the phenomenon of sagging skin, as another unwanted sign of aging.
The filler you may want to go for should provide a combination of effects such as lifting, contouring, firming and plumping to restore the lost facial volume from what is also referred to as “facial wasting”. Especially the effect on the cheek area is well-known and highly effective in restoring a more youthful appearance.
“I don’t like my deep nasolabial folds”
Nasolabial folds are another classic and widely distributed problem. They extend from the outer side of the nostrils, down to respective mouth angles and become deeper and overall more noticeable with advancing age.
Here you may ask your doctor for both soft and durable options within his selection of dermal fillers.
“I want to get rid of my marionette lines and creases around my mouth”
In more severe cases, the so-called marionette lines can extend from the corners of your mouth, all the way down beside the chin area. Another common nuisance are creases around the mouth angles. Vertical lip lines usually appear on the upper lip area and belong to the same category of unwanted mouth wrinkles. These lines and creases can best be tackled with fillers, that display longevity and flexibility in texture (while still being stable enough).
“Fine lines, Adieu!”
This problem ranks among the most difficult to treat and additional steps, besides filler treatment, must be considered (skin resurfacing procedures like chemical peelings or laser treatments). Fillers used for “crepey” skin and fine lines are usually softer in texture.
“My lips are too thin, I want them fuller”
The most classic indication for facial/dermal fillers per se. Nicely sculpted, full lips seem to be a trend, that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. While early approaches were more focused on gaining volume, nowadays, there is a multitude of options that allow for defining and sculpting the lips overall. Concerning the lips, the perfect choice for you depends on the type of the problem and your expectations. Some fillers are better for plumping, some excel at improving your lips definition and shape.
