In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. After missing his second slot, we now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
- "Why Even Try (RAC remix)," Theophilus London
I was introduced to this cat in my homies Oveous Maximus' car a little over a year ago. I heard a couple joints from mix tapes and felt like he had a interesting new sound. Fast forward to this past summer and I was treated to a concert for his album release. This is when I got to see the fella in action and thought to myself, "I like the lane he's creating for himself." "Why Even Try" is one of the songs featured on his debut LP Times Are Weird These Days. I dig the remix as well and decided to let you in on it.
- "By Your Side (Cottonbelly Fola Remix)," Sade
This song is not a new release. However, every time I spin it, I get a positive reaction from my audience. So I decided to introduce this afro beat remix to some new listeners and Sade fans. The original can be found on Sade's Lover's Rock LP. This particular version can be found on Red Hot+Riot, which is a Fela Kuti remix LP featuring some of today's noted artists. Dig the groove on this track.
- "Play (Substratum Remix)," Goapele
Keeping with the theme of fly remixes from smooth female vocalists who happen to be easy on the eyes, get a grip on this new offering from Goapele. This song is delivered in the traditional Goapele fashion, sexy and smooth, specifically designed for you to get your belly rub on.
- "Robots (Tensai Remix Alternative Version)," Bilal featuring Adad
Awwww Yeah! Peep this selection from our favorite, modern, psychedelic, R&B rockstar. I like Bilal's approach to music. He is not afraid of experimenting and thinking outside the atmosphere. This remix to "Robots" seems like it came right out of the future, which is now in most cases. Seriously though, lay this track on any Terminator movie and tell me it won't make since. Normally I wouldn't do this but, uuuuuuh … I couldn't find this particular remix but I want you to get a taste of what I'm talking about and this version does the job.
- "Unbelievers," The Dean's List
I know that I was on the remix tip this week but I had to break it up for this one. This is the first song I've heard from this cat. I like it and wanted to maybe give you a lil something new from this emcee. I like young emcees doing their thing. However, I could not find a YouTube clip for the song. I guess that leaves you with some homework to do. I can't do all of the research for your music library people! Haha!
