In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. After missing his second slot, we now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
- "Loved By Asians," Has-Lo
If you are a fan of feel good hip hop music, this song is for you. The humor begins with a Martin Lawrence skit to set the mood, then Has-Lo completes the mood with sharply delivered sarcastic player ish. Have fun with this one. - "Night Time," Hassaan Mackey & Apollo Brown
In a time where so many hip hop songs display a high tech sound with 808 and synthesized arrangements, this joint delivers a classic head nodding sound with a progressive edge. You can feel the soul in the vocals the way the cadence accompanies the track. It's well done. - "Swag," David Banner
I hope this track catches on. David Banner reveals his thoughts about the images portrayed in today's rap industry. I'm glad he did this song. Although, it probably won't be well received by his peers on the account it exposes many of today's rap artists falsified image. the next time you use the phrase "real talk" it will probably be while listening to this song. (NOTE: This song was available for download in our #musicmonday column on August 15) - "For Certain," Oddisee feat. Diamond District
What can I say, I'm on my underground hip hop kick this week. If you are a fan of that grungy basement sound and have a taste for a hypnotic baseline, this song is for you. This joint is truly reminiscent of one of those Jeru and Premier joints, so come clean and appreciate the funk. - "Ni**as In Paris (Dubsteppin Dj Warrior & Vision Remix)," Kanye West & Jay-Z
The original joint got people buggin' out on dance floors everywhere and this remix spices things up with a unique twist without varying so much that it screws your face. It keeps my audience bouncing when I mix it with the original. Word up! Yeah, I said word up. Deal with it. Ha ha!
