In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, headlined by the selections of our own "resident DJ," comic book fan, Star Wars and wrestling aficionado and all around swell guy, the world famous DJ Jedi [Facebook, Twitter and podcast]. He's graciously agreed to drop the science on musicology for you …
We lost one of the greats last week with the passing of Dwight Arrington Myers, better known to the world at large as Heavy D. RIP to a legend, and one of my early heroes from hip hop's Golden Era. I had the pleasure and good fortune to meet and rock a show with him less than a year ago. He was a down-to-earth, super chill dude. Respect to his family and loved ones.
In honor of his passing, this week's column is dedicated to the music of Heavy D.
Top 5 All-Time Favorite Heavy D Joints In no particular order …
- Heavy D & The Boyz featuring Kool G. Rap, Grand Puba, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, C.L. Smooth, & Q-Tip, "Don't Curse"
- Heavy D & The Boyz, "You Can't See What I Can See"
- Heavy D & The Boyz, "We Got Our Own Thang"
