Every week I do a column full of comic book reviews as I’ve done since March 2003 and currently published at Comic Book Resources. Then, after the reviews post, I try to come over to Komplicated and expand on the thoughts and ideas listed there. Why talk about stuff at some other site? Oh, like you’ve never done any private projects when you’re at work! Sometimes things get profound, sometimes it’s gibberish, but it’s always about comics … let’s see what we get this week!
What? This week’s reviews …
… SO LONG, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE SHARK: I wish you knew how emotional I was at that end of Secret Six. Wow. On my Facebook page, a commenter wrote, “Seriously, reading that last issue was like an emotional roller coaster. Gail Simone can do more in 22 pages than most can acomplist in a year arc. Damn, I’m gonna’ miss these misfits.” I completely concur. I only hope they can become like the Giffen/DeMatteis JLI, and the fan love will drive the property back to print every once in a while. Heck, if she were so inclined, I’d take Gail doing a similar concept independently. Jot that down.
THE TERM “BLATINO” IS OFFICIALLY OVERRULED: We did a big thing on the newly ethnic Ultimate Spider-Man a few days ago. Honestly, after reading the issue, it feels like a non-event: the kid was in the issue maybe four or five pages, and mostly got one joke repeated over and over.
Anyhoo, I would note that people jazzed about the Donald Glover angle don’t realize that if this is popular enough to get cinematic, he’d be way too old to spin webs as a teenaged Spidey by then. That’s how the Hollywood machine works, kids. Sorry.
FEAR FLASH FATIGUE: I’m bored of these crossovers. Fear Itself has too many elements of Blackest Night for my comfort, and havoc-wreaking hammer wielders (and soon to be Odin-empowered “Mighty”) don’t seem to interest me at all. Conversely, the Elseworld stylings of Flashpoint and the pending reboot leave a “calm befofe the storm” feeling that has left lame duck comics on the market (DC’s editorial didn’t help that feeling at all) and I’m too busy paying attention to next month’s comics.
THAT’S THE NEWS, AND I AM OUTTA HERE: Gotta warm up tonight for an appearance on Sunday Morning Live with Isidra Person-Lynn Sunday morning at 9AM, as well as writing the webcast script. hasta!
