Dear Democrats,
How are you feeling today? Slightly better, but still unsatisfied? Yeah, I know the feeling. I’m an Independent voter who has been both for and against you over the past thirty years. And with a few notable exceptions, voting for Democrats has always left me feeling unfulfilled.
As of this morning, you’ve regained control of the House of Representatives. Good for you. And yet, you somehow managed to lose seats in the Senate despite many of your Republican opponents receiving the “support” of the worst President ever. Your overall grade for the night is a C. Inconclusive at best.
But, as I mentioned, you won back the House. And that does mean something. As far as I’m concerned, you have exactly two years to show me what you can do.
Show me that you can lead.
Show me that you can legislate.
Show me that you can, for Christ sake, get something done.
Show me—and I mean this in the most non-gender specific way possible—that you’ve got some friggin’ balls!
Go after Immigration Reform or Gun Control or making Higher Education affordable. You know, things that people actually care about. And if you’re going to continue your drumbeat on Healthcare, stop clinging to the ACA like it was handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai. Give us real solutions to our very real problems.
Don’t spend the next two years investigating tax returns or Stormy Freaking Daniels or Russian tampering. You want to know why your candidate lost? Easy. She ran a lazy and entitled campaign whose core message was “You should vote for me because I said so.” I didn’t vote for that orange scumbag, but I didn’t vote for her either. And guess what? I’ve never regretted that decision for a single second. If you spend even one of the next 700+ days looking back instead of looking ahead, you will lose. Again.
While we’re on the topic of candidates, think long and hard about your next one. Whoever this person is, they had better come out swinging. Because the only way to beat a bully is to punch him in the mouth. Strike hard, strike often and, most importantly, strike first. You’ve spent the last two years (actually, the last four) on the defensive. It’s about time you fired the opening shot and followed it up with a couple dozen more. If any one of your candidates doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude for a good old-fashioned, no holds barred street fight, they should be stuffing envelopes for the candidate who does.
In sum, my dear Democrats, I am one of several million Independent voters in the U.S. We will determine your fate in 2020 just as we did in 2016. You have two years to impress us.
Don’t f**k it up!
Sincerely,
CJ Kaplan (U)
