In our Political Activism group, we talked about the horrific ways in which asylum seekers at our border are being treated—babies ripped from their parents arms, families separated and being held in detention camps for indeterminate amounts of time. This must stop. Here are some actions we came up with as a group.
1) Understand the ties to systemic racism — The reason that asylum seekers are treated so badly at the borders is to decrease the amount of POC seeking asylum. The long term goal is to increase the percentage of white people in the US. A great many of the policies this administration is trying to put into place are in support of this strategy.
2) CALL 866-888-5744. “I stand against the policy separating immigrant children from their parents and all policies criminalizing immigrants. Also defund ICE and CBP.” This has been recommended by the ACLU.
3) Text RESIST to 50409 — they will help you compose a letter that can be faxed to your representatives. Not sure what to say? See point #2. It’s called ResistBot if you forget the number.
4) Ask your representatives and people in the media to go down to the border so that we can get press events which show people what is happening. “Democracy dies in darkness” as the Washington Post says. Don’t let it die. Shine a light on the injustices.
5) Keep connecting the dots and sounding the alarm — Being able to tell the story about how our government is moving towards Authoritarianism, an Autocracy and even a Fascist Dictatorship is becoming increasingly critical. Now is the time to sound the alarm. You will be called an alarmist, which is exactly what happened in pre-WWII Germany. Speak up anyway. The time to be an alarmist is now.
6) Spread the word. Amplify messages. Support people in Congress who are taking action. #FamiliesBelongTogether is a hashtag being used by Dianne Feinstein and Elizabeth Warren. Support bill S.3036 From Feinstein: “40 senators now support our bill to bar children from being taken from their parents at the border. We’re continuing to ask Republican senators to join our bill. If you’re represented by a Republican senator, please ask them to cosponsor S.3036.”

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
