Upon first glance at the title, I expected ‘What To Do When Jane Knows Dick About Dating’ to be a sort of comedy about the dos and don’ts of dating.
I’m a comedian. So, I was immediately intrigued by the idea of what one might do if Jane knows nothing about dating. Then I began reading it and… It appears that I overlooked one major theme of the book. It is written to a female audience. Now, I feel like a spy. But, I also feel like this should make for a good book review. A man’s point of view. Does this woman have it all right? Could Laura Wellington be onto us? Could ‘What To Do When Jane Knows Dick About Dating’ answer age-old questions like are men really from Mars and if you’ve dated one woman, then you you’ve dated them all? I like to think that women are the same, only because of gender. The buck stops there, with me. But, let’s dive into what Laura Wellington thinks.
‘What To Do When Jane Knows Dick About Dating’ is, in fact, an insightful and helpful guide for women about dating men. I must say, I am impressed. I’m most impressed with the amount of knowledge of men Laura has. She begins her novel with a statement that crushes one of the world’s biggest myths:
“Men and women are not the same and never will be so long as sex exists between us.”
I read this statement and thought about it long and hard. It’s not like anyone really feels like men and women are the same, right? Not the same, meaning men are not women. And women are not men. That’s my take. But what did Laura have to say?
Laura describes a difference in men and women as this:
Women date with a means to an end.
And men are just out for a good time.
Even I had a ‘bag quota’… ‘bag’ meaning to get a girl, as in to hook up with. I set out to ‘bag’ as many girls as possible when I was young, but I will refrain from further remarks of my personal experiences as this is a book review. But Laura is onto something it would seem.
‘What To Do When Jane Knows Dick About Dating’ focuses on dating between men and women from start to finish. What’s deemed right and wrong? What has Jane done in dating, traditionally? What’s Dick done in dating, traditionally? And how her father’s advice helped her help daters.
In a nutshell, ‘What To Do When Jane Knows Dick About Dating’ is a very good take on dating. It gets right to the point and is worth every 191 pages of reading. As long as Jane focuses on herself while watching the Dicks and listening for and simply waiting for the truths that tell-all, she will do fine in this wild world of dating.
