Johnson’s crime? Hopping state lines to spend the night with Lucille Cameron, a white woman who would later become his second wife. Johnson was convicted of violating the Mann Act, ostensibly an anti-human trafficking law that was used to target African-Americans in consensual relationships throughout the Jim Crow era. While boxing fans and social-justice activists have long championed a posthumous presidential pardon for Johnson, who died in 1946, presidents since Bill Clinton have passed on the opportunity primarily due to Johnson’s out of the ring behavior. But it looks as though Johnson’s pardon might finally come from none other than Donald Trump. According to Trump on Twitter, actor Sylvester Stallone told him Johnson’s story, and the President found himself moved. On Apr. 21, Trump tweeted about Johnson: “His trials and tribulations were great, his life complex and controversial. Others have looked at this over the years, most thought it would be done, but yes, I am considering a Full Pardon!” Although social media users are usually sour about anything Trump touches, Johnson’s pardon might be an exception. Talk of a potential pardon gets 63 percent positive opinions online. –Hugo Guzman
