Each week, GMP contributors Michael Kasdan and Wai Sallas discuss the major issues of the sports world in their podcast, Sports Detox (set to continue next week). Sports are not merely a form of entertainment—but a popular means of communicating cultural messages. Many young men (and women) idolize athletes and seek to mimic both their on-field and off-field accomplishments. Athletes—rightly or wrongly—are often considered role models.
Consequently, it matters how athletes behave, even while far away from the cameras and stadium lights. Intimate details of their lives, such as drug use, acts of violence, and dalliances, are closely scrutinized. Many Americans could tell you more biographical details about their favorite sports stars than they could about George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.
Kasdan and Sallas recognize the importance of sports and go far beyond the scoreboard in their analyses, but they would like to hear more from their own “fans” about the role of sports in society and how masculinity (and femininity) is shaped through sports and other forms of entertainment.
