Being a family man can mean that you don’t have too much spare time on your hands. From work, family commitments, and things at home, finding time for much else can be a struggle. Which is why you can see a lot of men (and parents in general), looking to create jobs for themselves that are going to work around their families. Time is short and being able to have a job that offers a good work life balance can be a real driving force for many. But when you have very little spare time, there thought of having to start a business of your can be a pretty tricky one; when will you find the time?
So here are some ideas and examples of businesses that can be done on the side, and then taken full-time when you’re ready to do so. You don’t need a lot of money to get you started either; is there anything else that you would add to the list?
- Handy Skills. Being able to be handy around the house is something that all parents need to do. But you might have the know-how and skills to take this to the next level. For example, are you pretty handy with cars, or general decorating and DIY? Do you know some basic plumbing skills? Of course, some of these trades are going to need some training, so you could always do night school or online courses to help. Then you could be ordering your stainless steel pipe fittings and be off to help people in their homes. It can be flexible, as well as enjoyable, so it could be the job you’re looking for to work around your busy family life.
- Freelancing. If you do enjoy what you do for work at the moment, but simply do not enjoy the commute or the lack of seeing your family, then have you considered doing what you already do but just doing it as a freelancer? It can be a big step to step away and get your own clients, but being able to work from home can be a real blessing. You are your own boss then too, so you set the working hours, the schedule, and the prices.
- Selling Online. If you look at some really successful entrepreneurs, with the likes of Virgin’s Richard Branson or Lord Alan Sugar, then you will see that they started out their empires by buying and selling. But now we have the internet, you can quite easily take the business global and sell to anyone, anywhere. It is all about choosing the right things that people want to buy, and then being able to sell at the right price, and get them wholesale at the right price. It can be something that can get bigger and bigger.
- Property Management. If you are good with managing money, then how about looking into property to work as a buy-to-let landlord? You can even use sites like AirBnb for spare rooms, or help neighbors that need someone to show people around their home, if they are someone that does AirBnb. This is completely flexible, and can end up being pretty lucrative too.
