Hair loss is a very common issue. In fact, by the age of 35, two-thirds of men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss. By the age of 50, approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair.
.
Thankfully, with modern treatment options, hair loss is now easier to manage than ever before. The main cause of genetic hair loss is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone that causes hair to progressively thin or miniaturize over time until the hair eventually falls out. Each patient’s hair loss is not only different, but each one may have subtle distinctions. So, although people may suffer from hair loss, each individual’s requirements may differ.
After an accurate hair loss diagnosis, a variety of treatment methods should be considered, based on the person’s unique profile. Medical treatments may include platelet-rich plasma (PRP), finasteride, and minoxidil. PRP is rich in growth factors that are concentrated and injected to the areas of the scalp with thinning hair. PRP can awaken dormant hair follicles to reactivate them, and thus leading to healthier, thicker, and longer hair growth. Each treatment may be from $600-$900, and several may be required before a clinical benefit is seen. Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT and, thus, may prevent thinning of hair. It is a prescription medication which should be discussed with a physician. Minoxidil is available over the counter, inexpensive, and has been used for years to treat thinning hair. Most patients may use a combination of these modalities to treat their hair loss and thicken the hair.
When looking for treatment, make sure you do your homework. You want to choose a doctor who trained in a specialty related to aesthetics and hair loss, this is usually plastic surgery or dermatology. Doctors should be board certified in their primary specialty; and if they perform hair restoration procedures, they should also be certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons. It is important to ask these questions when you visit the office, and if you’re not comfortable then seek treatment elsewhere.
The Latest Hair Loss Treatment
The ARTAS iX is a cutting-edge robotic AI hair transplant system. The ARTAS iX can model a patient’s head and scalp in 3D—and can choose the healthiest hair for transplantation with incredible accuracy. While medication can slow down hair loss, they are not able to regrow hair. With hair transplants, patients can fill in bald spots and completely rebuild their thinning hairlines. With hair restoration, we want patients to look better, of course. But more importantly, we aim to give them the confidence, vitality, and motivation they lost because of their appearance. Many patients are afraid that others will notice their hair transplant. However, the new hair gradually grows over time, and in 9-12 months the resulting transformation is new, healthy, and vibrant.
