What’s your
favourite kind of
reality TV show?
Yes, yes, I know–you don’t have one, because reality television isn’t real and it’s so fake and it clearly augers the end of western civilization as we know it, blah, blah, blah.
Regardless of your firm stance against them, they’re not going away anytime soon in a vast multichannel chasm of entertainment that constantly demands new, cheap content. And chances are that as much as you say you hate them, there’s at least ONE show or genre that you actually don’t mind. Yes, there are a lot of Jersey Shores, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Bikini Barber Shops (I’m not making that last one up) out there, but to dismiss the whole genre out of hand because of the worst possible examples is kinda like refusing to see Some Like It Hot because you didn’t like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.
I mean the Antiques fricking Road Show counts as reality TV and it’s on PBS!
So, yeah, clearly I don’t share a lot of folks’ knee-jerk bias against the format and take a lot of its cliches and problems in stride–mostly because some of them are so goddamn good at making me feel emotions and I like feeling emotions! This is especially true of my emotional kryptonite–cooking competition shows.
Of these my favourites remain Top Chef and Masterchef–the first for the level of the competition being displayed and the second because I have a big huge crush on Gordon Ramsay and don’t care who knows it. He just makes me happy. Deal with it.
Now, c’mon….there has to be one or two shows that you don’t loathe and are willing to admit watching. What are they? And do they have Gordon Ramsay in them?
Antiques fricking Road Show, FTW! ♥
Does “Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry” count? ‘Cause it feels like a reality show to me, LOL
Also, “What Not to Wear.” Yes, I like makeover shows. I’ll leave the cool kids table now 😉
Okay, in order of how I want to lose my dignity, my fave reality shows were/are:
-Girls Next Door
-Kendra
-Chopped
-Antique Roadshow
-Storage Wars
-Cake Boss
-my own life
The ones where talent is truly on display… so I used to watch American Idol (11 years) but while there were some talented people, it became more about the judges… and quite frankly, the “talent” started to wane as they were picking the ones they thought could garner attention as opposed to the ones that had the best talent. Plus… how many more Caucasian boys on guitars could I really stand? Now, it’s down to cooking shows (Master Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, Chopped, etc.) and dance shows like So You Think You Can Dance (not Dancing with the Stars – that’s… Read more »
