“Good children don’t cause problems; they always do what others expect. They do their homework on time; their writing is neat; they keep their bedroom tidy; they are often a little shy; they want to help their parents; they use their brakes when cycling down a hill.
Because they don’t pose many immediate problems, we tend to assume all is well with good children. They aren’t the target for particular concern; that goes to the kids who are graffitiing the underpass. People imagine the good children are fine; because they do everything that’s expected of them. They seem to be on track. But there are real problems with people who never have a chance to be a little bad.”

Do you have a story related to the dark side of your childhood? How did being good in order to pacify a troubled adult affect your life, your masculinity? How did you learn to express your dark side in a healthier manner? What issues of codependency did you have to work through or are you still working through?
Tell us as much as you want about yourself but please share details about a living person in a sensitive manner. Let us know that you have changed the name(s) and relationship roles to protect any person you mention.

The Good Men Project is different from most media companies. We are a “participatory media company”—which means we don’t just have content you read and share and comment on but it means we have multiple ways you can actively be a part of the conversation. As you become a deeper part of the conversation (Which really is “The Conversation No One Else is Having), you will learn all of the ways we support our Writer’s Community—community FB groups, weekly conference calls, classes in writing, editing platform building and How to Create Social Change.
