As an online dating photographer, I often seek out feedback and observations from users of online dating sites. One of the most notable, yet random observations I hear from women is the proliferation of fish photos appearing on men’s online dating profiles. In an effort to evolve from selfies and move toward outdoor photos showcasing a hobby, fish photos have flooded online dating profiles. If online dating existed in the days of hunter-gatherers, I could see the appeal — this man can catch big fish and provide shelter for me — check! However, in the modern age, these photos are not only dated but cliché and highlight a common theme in male profiles: the need to highlight some sort of achievement and/or capturing an unoriginal image.
Whether catching a fish, posing in front of your vehicle, plane or boat, visiting Machu Picchu or taking a photo with a baby tiger, cliché photos that fail to depict distinct achievement or creative side can hurt your chances of separating yourself from the masses. Worst, it can group you in with the less desirable men that you hear about in magazines, conversations among women or Buzzfeed.
Women love to see photos where they can see themselves sharing hobbies you have. When was the last time you saw a woman posting a fish photo? Exactly! Shared hobbies and interests go a long way in creating potential illustrations of what dating you can be like.
Instead, focus on capturing something you love, don’t be afraid of sharing a self-deprecating photo in an epic fail, or even better focus on something that illustrates a candid moment in your life. Trying to take the perfect profile photo or even putting too much effort into staging the right shot backfire. A photo that captures you in a flattering manner in everyday life can be more revealing than you think.

In other words, putting up a Fish Photo on your dating profile will effectively weed out the women who aren’t the least interested in having a partner who enjoys fishing.
And since you (the GMP) run parallell stories about how important it is to be true to yourself, that can only be a good thing, right. Right?
Definitely am not saying to hide your passions or interests but rather do not post a photo of you with the fish you have caught. Instead, post a photo on the boat having fun with friends.
