Editor MJ Day told Vanity Fair she wanted to put out a product where “different standards of beauty could be celebrated” — meaning women of different ages and body types — while also giving them a platform to discuss issues that are important to them. Central to that theme is a spread in the issue called “In Her Own Words,” where athletes and models have words of positivity and empowerment written on their bodies. Day admitted that “at the end of the day, we’re always going to be sexy, no matter what is happening. We’re Sports Illustrated Swimsuit.” But she added, “The ideal is to create something artful, to create a beautiful image that both the subject and the team is proud of and collaborates on together.” Over the last three days, @SI_Swimsuit has a 96 percent positive score, with words driving the vibe like “amazing,” “incredible,” and “in love.” While men and women both approve of the new issue, women have assigned the @SI_Swimsuit handle a higher positive percentage than men. Some mentions include the #InHerOwnWords campaign, though not in overwhelming numbers. –Alex Shultz, Image: Twitter / @SI_Swimsuit
