PBS Inventors: Massage Chair

Until the 1980s, professional massage was done either lying on a table or sitting on a chair or stool. David Palmer found this traditional method of seated massage problematic as his customer’s would get so relaxed they’d fall over. So he developed a new kind of massage chair. Over the years it evolved from a heavy wooden “chair in a box” to a lighter model we see everywhere today.
