The Good Men Project

Marvel’s The Punisher Reeks of Testosterone (A Call for Submissions)

My Facebook feed was full of excitement about “The Punisher” coming out on NETFLIX. Of all the movies I have to choose from, this would not have been my first choice. However, I have watched and enjoyed other Marvel shows, so I binged watched this new arrival.

I don’t think I’m giving anything away when I say it is a male-dominated film with two main female characters (reporter and FBI) and one two minute appearance by a female hacker. The main motivations, aside from conscience, is the killing of one family (woman and two kids) and protecting another family (woman and two kids). There are a few other subplots as well.

The Punisher devotes most of its screen time to gore: torture, killings, murder, vicious fights, and isolation. In parts, I had to turn the sound off and look away. Side themes are friendship and the difficulty of the Vet returning stateside and fitting in. I don’t think I give anything away when I state the last line in the movie: “I am scared.”

We want to hear your point of view:

The Punisher is a movie about domination and manipulation, the ability to take and receive physical and mental punishment, and winning – at any cost. How do these concepts coincide with your view of Masculinity? Does it change it? Support it? Question it?

If you happen to watch such a film with an impressive young male, would you feel you needed to make offsetting comments to mitigate some of the violence? If not, would you have a discussion afterward about the different behaviors and motivations? Relate it to the young male’s life going forward? Or do you feel the movie stands for and speaks to an appropriate masculine stereotype?

What are the positive masculine traits you feel the movie engenders? At what point do you say, if you say, “I want to be like him?” There are any number of characters for which that might hold true. And, if you have a favorite character, what traits would you add to your own? What traits would you get rid of?
