Welcome to Good Men Project Sports.

Yes, we cover sports, and we enjoy the the on-the-field athletic exploits and the human stories behind them. What differentiates us is that we are also committed dig below the surface to get at the bigger social issues that rise up out of and flow through the massive worldwide sports and entertainment platform that is “sports.”

At Good Men Project Sports, we are looking at the multi-dimensionality of sports, just like we are looking at the multi-dimensionality of men. What we are doing at GMPSports is making sports –and the conversation around sports– more inclusive, deeper, and more profound. In this way –we are challenging and changing the very fabric of sports and masculinity– we think for the better.

We don’t shy away from talking about the big social and cultural issues. We embrace them.

At GMPSports we use sports as a platform around which we discuss our biggest social issues, like racism, sexism, bullying, education, mental health, and masculinity (to name a few). We publish pieces that we can build dialogue around on issues that connect sports with our larger culture and society. This means, a mix of ‘the good’ and ‘the bad,’ from the beauty and grace of sports, teamwork, role models, from humor to poignant, to the tough stuff where Sports acts like a prism and amplifier of our culture.

To be sure, we are here for all the good stuff that happens both on and off the field (or the court). But we are also here for when Kyle Korver of the NBA speaks out about white privilege and how to be a good ally. We are here to focus on complex issues of racism, when Tim Anderson’s suspension reveals that MLB needs to work on gaining understanding of racism. We are here to bridge the world of soccer and workplace gender issues when Megan Rapinoe speaks out in favor of equal pay for women and woman athletes. We are here when the best basketball players in the world, guys like Kevin Love and Royce White, want to speak out about mental health and help to de-stigmatize health issues like depression or anxiety. We are here to talk about the disposability of men and athletes and to question why we expect them to come back from brutal injuries fastthrow 100 MPH fastballs over and over and over again despite the risk of serious arm injury, and challenge why we play and watch sports that risk serious brain injuries. We are here to talk about when football locker rooms or gymnastics training rooms become bastions of toxicity and abuse, how we treat college athletes and what it teaches us about privilege.and what we should be doing about it.

Sports can also be a great platform both for social activism and social change. (Check out MLK Jr. on that point, or many of today’s athletes.) These are the stories we tell, and these are the stories we will keep telling.

And if you are a brand, organization, business, or non-profit who wants to reach and active and engaged audience and get 2.5 million impressions over the course of the campaign—please consider partnering with us.

We have a special package deal that combines our most exciting opportunities, and can scale that program up or down depending on your business needs.

For example, we have regular weekly columns, such as The Heart of Sports, So…This Happened, or our podcast, Sports Detox, all of which are available for sponsorship.

“So…This Happened” is a weekly column authored by our Sr. Sports Editor, Mike Kasdan. It is a snappy witty round up of the three biggest sports stories of the week. The topics that are covered range from pure sports feats to the stories from the world of sports that connect to larger social issues and trends. Essential water cooler reading for sports and non sports fans alike.

“The Heart of Sports” is a weekly column that curates poignant content from social media that provide a window into the beating heart of sports. The father-son bonds forged in sport. The tender moments among teammates. The thrilling moments from your childhood that you never forget.

“Sports Detox” is a weekly podcast—at times serious and at times humorous—that looks at the latest stories from the world of sports, both positive and negative, that are tied into cultural and societal issues. Hosts Wai Sallas and Mike Kasdan are equal parts rabid sports fan and serious social commentator. The Detox is a back-and-forth pop-culture-infused peeling of the onion of sports that gets at its many layers and reverberations.
