The Good Men Project

The Land of Extraordinary Diversity

00:00
throughout my travels over the last five
00:02
years I spent months traveling all
00:04
around India visiting tons of different
00:06
places from big cities to tiny villages
00:08
from sky-high mountains to large planes
00:10
from some of the richest areas to some
00:12
of the poorest slums as well as a result
00:15
a lot of different people have been
00:16
asking me hundreds of questions about
00:18
what it was like to travel in India and
00:21
that is why I decided to make this video
00:23
where you will get all of your questions
00:26
answered without further ado here’s
00:28
everything you need to know about this
00:29
gorgeous amazing country India India’s
00:33
history is incredibly old as one of the
00:36
earliest and largest civilizations the
00:38
Indus civilization lived in India from
00:40
the year 2500 before Christ located in
00:44
the Indus Valley this civilization was
00:46
highly developed the used tools made
00:48
from ayran relied heavily on trade had
00:51
sophisticated urban planning and even a
00:53
written language which remains
00:54
undeciphered to this day from there
00:57
india saw the rise of the vedic
00:59
civilization which laid the groundwork
01:01
for the language of sanskrit and the
01:03
earliest hindu texts as indo-aryan
01:05
people became less nomadic and more
01:07
urbanized other major religions such as
01:09
Buddhism began to arise in the last
01:11
millennium before Christ during the
01:13
medieval period of India’s history the
01:16
caste system established a strong
01:18
foothold in Indian society Islam arrived
01:20
and political powers began to be more
01:23
centralized the largest and greatest of
01:25
this was the Mughal Empire which took
01:27
power in the 16th century under their
01:29
rule India became more United than ever
01:32
before as they were able to unite some
01:34
Muslim and Hindu kingdoms the 16th
01:36
century also saw the arrival of the
01:38
British as they set up the East India
01:40
Company with the permission of Queen
01:42
Elizabeth the first two centuries later
01:44
the Mughal Empire began to decline and
01:47
the British saw an opportunity to seize
01:50
control of India and expand
01:52
their vast empire the indian people were
01:55
very hostile toward the british and for
01:57
good reason the british met any form of
01:59
rebellion with violence and there were
02:01
several massacres of Indian people
02:03
throughout the British rule however it
02:05
was extremely difficult for the Indian
02:07
people to fight back because during the
02:09
course of the British rule there were a
02:11
total of 31 major famines in India which
02:14
killed millions of people the final
02:17
straw came after World War one when
02:19
India experienced an economic crisis
02:21
that led to food shortages rats any
02:23
major influenza outbreak the Indian
02:25
people desperately needed leadership in
02:27
their efforts for independence and
02:29
turned to the now legendary Mahatma
02:32
Gandhi Gandhi was an advocate for
02:34
nonviolent protest and encouraged the
02:36
Indian people to be non cooperative with
02:38
the British as he result Gandhi was
02:40
arrested by the British in 1922 for
02:43
conspiracy to overthrow the government
02:45
and was imprisoned to two years upon his
02:48
release from prison
02:49
Gandhi continued to travel around India
02:52
and encourage people to engage in civil
02:54
disobedience as a way of nonviolent
02:56
protest which gained a massive following
02:59
across the country in 1943 Gandhi now 73
03:03
years old was arrested yet again but
03:05
this time without any charge and so
03:07
began a hunger strike in prison which
03:10
lasted for 21 days and was only released
03:12
when the public’s anger to this
03:14
injustice became uncontrollable finally
03:17
in the wake of World War two the British
03:19
government could no longer sustain their
03:21
occupation of India and began to write a
03:23
legislation that would end their rule
03:26
and so in 1947 after 200 years of
03:30
British rule India became a free and
03:33
independent nation
03:46
the first thing you need to know about
03:47
India is that it’s not with the country
03:50
it’s more like a never ending continent
03:52
which makes their nature change
03:53
dramatically depending on the region
03:55
you’re in the north has two distinct
03:58
geographical features the Himalayas and
04:00
the thar desert making it both the
04:02
hottest and the coldest region of the
04:04
country
04:04
the south is known for its dense
04:06
tropical forests with a lot of
04:08
biodiversity
04:09
no wonder they have as many as 15
04:11
amazing wildlife sanctuaries there the
04:14
eastern part of India has a very diverse
04:16
landscape you can see mountains valleys
04:18
and of course freshwater lakes finally
04:21
the West is famous for being the home to
04:23
India’s richest state as well as some of
04:25
the most beautiful beaches in the world
04:27
that attract millions of visitors every
04:30
year
04:30
[Music]
04:39
the nature in India obviously is
04:42
incredibly fascinating but wait until
04:44
you hear about its people the Indian
04:46
people certainly have a lot more fun
04:48
than most other cultures in the world
04:50
everything that Indians are involved in
04:53
inevitably has an exciting and loud
04:55
laboratory in certain parts of the
04:57
country even funerals are celebrated by
04:59
singing and dancing the Indian people
05:02
also have an incredibly strong sense of
05:04
family only here you can see families
05:06
with dozens of members and up to four
05:08
generations living under a single roof
05:11
speaking with each other
05:12
no matter what India could rightly be
05:16
called the world’s capital of religion
05:18
as it’s the birthplace of Hinduism
05:20
Buddhism Jainism and Sikhism with
05:22
Hinduism being the most popular religion
05:24
with over 1 billion people practicing
05:27
the religion in Hinduism cows are
05:29
considered to be sacred and they are a
05:31
very important part of the Indian
05:33
culture and best there are now over 44
05:36
million cows here the highest amount in
05:38
the world India boasts one of the most
05:41
diverse and incredible cuisines ever
05:43
that varies greatly depending on the
05:45
region the northern Indian cuisine is
05:47
known for having thick rich and dairy
05:49
heavy dishes that use a wide range of
05:51
local fruits and vegetables which grow
05:54
throughout the year in the South the
05:56
dishes are largely rice based and there
05:58
you will find some of the spices food in
06:00
the country if you have a sweet tooth
06:02
then you should definitely head to the
06:04
east because some of India’s most famous
06:06
desserts come from this part of the
06:08
country
06:08
finally the western part of India has a
06:11
great mix of meat and vegetarian dishes
06:13
so that everyone can find what they’re
06:15
looking Indians are completely crazy
06:20
about chicken it is pretty much
06:22
everywhere in this country it is by far
06:24
the biggest party in 1983 the India
06:27
national cricket team achieved arguably
06:30
the biggest upset in the sports history
06:32
when they beat the West Indies the
06:34
two-time defending champions in the
06:36
World Cup
06:36
the players on that team became national
06:39
heroes and since then India’s cricket
06:41
players are
06:42
most famous people in the country India
06:45
also won the 2011 World Cup at home in
06:48
Mumbai against Sri Lanka and people
06:50
celebrated with parties on the streets
06:52
firecrackers flags and lots of dancing
06:55
cricket is so popular that in the last
06:57
few dozen years the number of households
06:59
in India with the TV jumps and 30
07:01
million to hundreds of millions
07:02
lyza so that people could keep up with
07:04
their favorite sport have you seen that
07:06
video of me spending 5 days living in
07:08
the slums of Mumbai
07:10
if you thought that’s what most of India
07:11
looks like check this out
07:13
India is the world’s fastest growing
07:15
economy and the seventh largest overall
07:18
what are the largest export all things I
07:21
take in 2017 alone that generated 154
07:25
billion dollars in revenue India is also
07:28
the third largest hub for startups in
07:30
the world with thousands of new tech
07:32
companies being established every year
07:34
obviously India still has a long way to
07:36
go to reach the living standards of some
07:38
of the other top 10 largest economies as
07:40
over a hundred million people still live
07:42
in the slums but they’re actively
07:44
working towards it a lot of the slums
07:46
get redeveloped new skyrise apartment
07:48
complexes are being built and people get
07:50
educated to be well-paid white-collar
07:52
work for national and international
07:54
corporations I know I’ve already told
07:56
you quite a bit about this beautiful
07:58
country but check out these amazing
07:59
facts you might not have known before
08:02
India’s film industry called Bollywood
08:04
produces most films in the entire world
08:07
over a thousand films per year but gain
08:09
large crowds of yours as every day
08:11
around 14 million people in India go to
08:14
the movies the city of Varanasi is the
08:16
oldest continually inhabited city in the
08:19
world dating all the way back to the
08:20
11th century before Christ the city was
08:23
even visited by Buddha himself Indian
08:26
scientists were the first people in the
08:28
world to discover water on the moon
08:30
which was a mind-boggling discovery in
08:33
2009 Freddie Mercury the lead singer of
08:36
Queen is a vendian descent he was born a
08:39
Parsi for the name Farouk al-shara yoga
08:41
was of course created in India about
08:43
5000 years ago and today has the most
08:46
affiliated and unaffiliated yoga school
08:48
in the world
08:49
in 2011 a group of 75 million people
08:52
gathered for the Kumbha Mela the
08:54
gathering was so massive that it was
08:57
visible from space last but not least
09:00
India is also known as the land of this
09:02
spice since they produce over 70% of the
09:05
world spices if you think that the only
09:10
place you should explore in Indies the
09:12
Taj Mahal and you are very wrong my
09:14
friend here are my top favorite touristy
09:17
places you should explore let’s start
09:20
with a statue of unity which is the
09:22
world’s tallest statue that’s 182 metres
09:25
tall and looks absolutely unreal
09:28
especially from the distance then we
09:30
have the ancient town of orchha which
09:32
used to be one of the richest Indian
09:33
cities that’s home to some incredibly
09:36
beautiful forts and palaces you can get
09:38
lost in moving on there’s one of the
09:40
most popular hill stations in India
09:42
called Mahabaleshwar that has one of the
09:44
very few evergreen forests in India as
09:46
well as an awe-inspiring Canyon and
09:49
gorgeous mountain roads place to visit
09:51
number four is one of my favorite places
09:53
in India called hampi which used to be
09:56
the world’s second largest city in the
09:58
14th century that’s now become a tiny
10:00
village with an amazing temple rooms as
10:02
well as lots of the beautiful nature
10:04
spots
10:10
then there’s the world-famous irani
10:12
kebab step that has over 500 intricate
10:15
statues and is so well preserved it’s
10:17
even been called the cleanest iconic
10:19
place of India
10:20
lastly the wide sand butterfly beach in
10:23
the state of Goa that will take quite a
10:25
while to reach but make you feel so good
10:27

10:30
