Are certain tattoos off-limits to men?

One Direction singer Harry Styles is causing quite a stir with his newest piece of body art, which is a large black butterfly in the center of his chest. Although you can’t actually see his face in the photo, E! News reports that a representative for the star said that it is “definitely” Styles in the photo.

Twitter is of course, all aflutter with the news. Some fans love the new artwork,

But it seems that most of the comments are leaning more toward the side of ridicule,

The fact that Styles, who according to the Daily Mail already has almost 30 tattoos, decided to get what many critics are claiming is a very “feminine” tattoo, has me a bit curious.

Are there certain tattoos that are specifically “masculine” or “feminine”?

If a tattoo has significant meaning to the person “wearing” it, should the distinction really matter?
