POEM
After years and years go by
You may perhaps
If the gods of fortune do please
Have
A
Steady job, an occupation
(a daily drip of income to cover the ever-increasing expenses)
A
Family, kids
(to fuss over, nervously hoping they will turn out well)
A
Roof over your head
(hopefully your own after years of painstaking payments)
A
Car
( a spanking new model bought with the help of the company)
All this is good.
But
Is there, more?
Is there perhaps
Something else
That goes on
Forevermore?
What body of work do you leave them
Your sons, your daughters
Your friends, your kin?
Where is your lasting contribution
That will accrete into some form
An immortal legacy?
Where is your jewel
Of value in another time and space
In other realms?
Where is your treasury
That time cannot steal
When it comes to steal you away?
In the cemetery, we deposit the body
In the bank, papers of value
In the hearts of our kin, memories
Where is the jewel
Where is the coin
Payment for the passage?
The keeper of the gate will ask
Show me, show me
Do you have your coin?
