A recent story on The Good Men Project by Michael Kasdan

Earlier this week, the NFL spontaneously announced that it was ceasing the practice of “race-norming” in connection with its head injury class action settlement. When the news broke, most people didn’t know what “race-norming” was (and many likely still don’t.).

Specifically, in calculating the amount to be paid out from the settlement pool for former player’s claims for diseases, like dementia, that arose from concussions or other head injuries, the League’s “policy” was to assume that the baseline cognitive function of Black men was less than that of their White counterparts, leading to reduced damages being paid to Black men for the same injury.
Yes, you read that right. That’s “race-norming.”

On today’s #StopRacism call, we discussed this in detail.

Callers found it both “shocking and not surprising.”
That’s how racism works.

Others want to know, what else is being swept under the rug? Not just by the NFL, but by other corporations, institutions, and organizations.

We talked about how similar to fossil fuel companies, there is a tactic called “predatory delay”. The NFL likely knows their racist practices make them more profitable, so they try to hold onto them as long as possible.

Every Tuesday evening our #StopRacism group looks at racism through news and world events. This LIVE call with The Good Men Project community has been happening for years and is life-changing for the participants. This is the recording of the call from Tuesday, June 8th.

We tackle the difficult topics because we want to figure out a way to create a more inclusive culture and a better world for everyone.

We’d love to have you join us for the next one. Talk to you soon!
