Tom Matlack agrees with Mark Cuban: profits are not a zero-sum game, and the more you make, the more impact you can have.
My fellow GMP evangelist Jackie Summers sent along a blog from Mav’s owner Cuban, often considered borderline insane, on patriotism called, “The Most Patriotic Thing You Can Do: Bust Your Ass and Get Rich.” In it Cuban states:
Make a boatload of money. Pay your taxes. Lots of taxes. Hire people. Train people. Pay people. Spend money on rent, equipment, services. Pay more taxes.
I do actually like Mark Cuban, even though he can be a real asshole at times.
He’s kind of like Howard Stern, also an ass at times, in that he doesn’t sugar coat it: he tells the dead honest truth.
The other thing I like about him is that I always get the sense that he knows his wealth is born as much out of luck as of skill. The guy had a silly company at the right time (Broadcast.com was losing money and $13.5 million of quarterly revenue when he sold it for $5.9 billion to Yahoo) and became a billionaire. He knows that. But what he has done since is far more interesting than most. He is passionate and true to the prick that he really is. I like that.
So many people who are wealthy use their wealth as a way to look down on the rest of the world. They are fake human beings. Absolutely makes me want to vomit.
I agree with Cuban on this making money being patriotic (“I don’t care what anyone says. Being rich is a good thing. Not just in the obvious sense of benefiting you and your family, but in the broader sense. Profits are not a zero sum game. The more you make the more of a financial impact you can have.”) and pretty much everything else he has done.
He did shut Lebron and D-Wade up in the finals, after all. For that we should all be eternally grateful.

“Make a boatload of money. Pay your taxes. Lots of taxes. Hire people. Train people. Pay people. Spend money on rent, equipment, services. Pay more taxes.”
Nothing wrong in this. But how are you making money? Clearly some guys had the brilliant idea of making boatloads of money by lending “cheap money” and create the ridiculous expectation on a society that was not prepared to pay the price. Those people made a lot; had lot’s of impact and now… here we are… in a limbo.
Only the treasury makes money, for everyone else, you get money but sucking it up from everyone else. The more money you have, the less money the rest of the community has and for the narcissist, a perfect life where they have total impact upon everyone else’s life and of course every one else just has to shut up and suck it up.
Greed and democracy, do not go hand in hand, greed is the parasite that corrupts democracy to feed it’s own ego because only greed’s opinion counts and for every one else, zero impact.
That’s a surprisingly good blog post by Mr. Cuban. The best part of it is “When you make a shitload of money. Do something positive with it. If you are smart enough to make it, you will be smart enough to know where to put it to work.” He sounds like a younger version of Warren Buffet. There’s nothing wrong with being rich. It just seems like there’s so many of the 1% that get rich by skirting the system, minimizing their taxes, exporting jobs for cheaper labour, and locking their pennies away like Scrooge McDuck that it hides the… Read more »
