Dubai, a city synonymous with modern architecture and luxury, also safeguards its rich history within the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, also known as Al Bastakiya. For visitors keen on exploring this historical treasure and other attractions at their own pace, sport car rental is a great choice. Numerous car rental services are available at Dubai International Airport and throughout the city, offering various vehicles to suit different needs. Having a car allows you to conveniently travel to the Bur Dubai side of the creek, where Al Fahidi is located, and explore other parts of the city.
Here’s why Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is a must-visit:
- Historical Significance: Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is the reconstructed oldest location in Dubai, showcasing the city’s past with its traditional architecture, open spaces, and cultural attractions. It represents Dubai’s way of life, traditions, and architectural features before the oil boom.
- Origins: The construction of Al Fahidi dates back to the 1890s. It was primarily built by wealthy Persian merchants who were drawn to Dubai by the rich trade opportunities. The district was named after the southern Iranian town of Bastak.
- Architecture: Al Fahidi features a web of restored houses made of mud and stones, narrow alleys, and squares. The architecture reflects the unique features of Arab construction, including the use of wind towers to cool buildings. Building materials often included coral stones extracted from the sea, as well as limestone and gypsum.
- Near Demolition: In the 1980s, half of the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood was destroyed to make way for a new office complex. In 1989, the Dubai Municipality directed that the remaining parts of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood were to be demolished. However, a British architect, Rayner Otter, started a campaign to preserve the area, and Prince Charles intervened, leading to the cancellation of the demolition.
- Restoration: In 2005, the Dubai Municipality initiated a project to restore the old buildings and lanes. Today, Al Bastakiya comprises over 60 houses lined in narrow alleys.
- What to See and Do: Al Fahidi is home to museums, art galleries, shops, and cafes. Major attractions include the Dubai Museum located in the Al Fahidi Historical Fort, an ethnographic village, and a diving village.
- Cultural Events: Al Fahidi district plays an important role in the social and cultural life of Dubai, becoming a venue for many cultural events and mass events.
- Location: Bastakiya is located on the Bur Dubai side of the creek on Al Fahidi Road. Its entrance is next to the Al Fahidi roundabout, where Al Fahidi Road and Al Hamriya Street meet.
- Accessibility: The location is well connected by public transport. The Ghubaiba bus station and the Al Fahidi metro station are less than a kilometer away.
Visiting Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood offers an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the past, learn about the history and culture of Dubai, and enjoy traditional cuisine in local restaurants and cafes. It’s a living museum where you can see traditional Arab houses and wind towers, reflecting the unique features of Arab construction.
