How an article my wife sent me from a writer I’d never heard of changed my way of thinking. I think it will change yours, too.
—
A few days ago, my wife sent me a message that said only “THIS” with a web link after it. Since she (like me) isn’t prone to being concise when we talk or write, I instantly knew it touched her deeply. One click opened up a piece by Shavawn M. Berry on a site my wife frequents, Rebelle Society. I’d never read anything by Ms. Berry, but a mere few sentences in, and was completely engrossed. The article was called “Breadcrumbs In Dark Times: Any Minute Now, Everything Will Change“, and it speaks to the upheaval and imminent change in our world. How the time is now to step up and do the work that needs to be done to keep the world a place we all can live in peacefully and happily. Change and darkness are ahead, but that necessity will lead to long range sustainability for all of us. To say it resonated with me would be a profound understatement.
What struck me most was that her point is largely lost on men, but it should not be. As men we tend to think short term: we need to provide for our families and ourselves. How do we do that? By working and making money. And then we need to make more money to give ourselves things we don’t need but want, “without ever considering whether our approach is actually sustainable. In a world of limited resources, it is not.” We chase things instead of ideas. We exchange our future for the now. All of us, men included, need to shed this mindset and fast.
I don’t want to taint what Ms. Berry said with my mediocre interpretations. What she says is better written than I could ever hope to do, so here it is below, as she said it. I only ask that everyone, men especially, read it and think bigger than the next paycheck. Our world may depend on it.

“Allow dark times to season you.” ~ Hafiz
When the Going Gets Tough…
These days, the rough patch we’re navigating has turned into a very long haul. I believe we’ll weather the changes. I believe we’re strong enough to do so. Still, it’s easy to fall into despair and wish that our journey wasn’t so rife with trouble.
Right now, we’re in a thick soup of changes that rival any changes we’ve weathered in human history. The shit’s hitting the fan — environmentally, economically, emotionally — and everywhere we look, people are losing it. Shooting up the joint. Setting themselves on fire. Totaling their cars. Blowing up their personal lives.
Now Entering Transformation Station.
Transformation is not optional right now. It is required. We cannot continue to fumble blindly in the darkness, unaware of the light we possess. We must solve the problems we’ve created.
And although this awakening is painful — like road rash, or a broken bone that hasn’t been set yet — we can’t wait for rescue. Not this time. We are the people we are waiting for. We must step up and take the reins. There is no one else. Just us.
What has always worked, no longer works.
It’s been heartening to hear that Marianne Williamson is running for congress. She told Larry King that we cannot make decisions for humanity based upon economics alone.
I agree. Capitalists are pragmatic by nature. They will never look at the long term consequences of their policies. They look at the bottom line, the current returns, the profit margins — without ever considering whether their approach is actually sustainable. In a world of limited resources, it is not.
As a result, we’re now tasked with learning to live more softly, reverently, and carefully.
Be here now, even if the thought absolutely terrifies you.
Don’t check out. Don’t go back to sleep. The world desperately needs you — it needs your talents, your passion, your ideas, your voice.
Yes, these are hard times, dark times, strange times. Yet, something wonderful and raw is rumbling and singing and coming back to life. I can feel it brushing my face just moments before I wake up in the morning. I can feel it when I focus on stories that nurture and enrich my life, instead of on those that deplete me.
I encounter kindred spirits and soul friends every day through the power of social media and my writing (blogs, magazines, LinkedIn, Facebook). It is as though we’ve inadvertently created the perfect way for those of us experiencing this rebirth, to connect or reconnect.
Not Just Changing Lanes. Taking the Road Less Traveled.
This unknown darkness where we sit — as individuals and as a global community — is slowly revealing itself. It inherently knows what the next step is. We must trust the process and allow the darkness to ‘season us’ as Hafiz wrote.
Hour by hour, and day by day, breadcrumbs are left along the road.
We’ve escaped the dangerous, deliciously inviting cottage that inhabited our nightmares. We’ve managed to counter-act the spell we’ve been under, avoiding certain death. We’ve foiled our nemesis and broken the snare that has entrapped us for far too long.
We’re running free.
Can you feel it?
Any minute now, everything will change.

I will admit I am short sighted, the war and collapse that I predicted and started preparing for, are already here. UKRAINE WAS THE FIRST DOMINOE TO FALL. It didn’t look right when we left it in 2005, and saying so officially cost me that career – but in 2012 when they turned it all back on because the situation WAS AFU, my phone rang. Damn, it sucks to be right. This summer will be full of fail, dead, and many “I told you so” memos. I am not thinking of anything beyond 2017, I haven’t for ten years –… Read more »
Makes me think of my father. You see, he’s one of those men who IS looking to the future, but not his future. The future of everyone. He’s an earth scientist who during his career he worked for the UK government as a researcher on the melting of polar ice caps. Now he’s got together with other scientists to see if they can figure out how to avert the environmental catastrophe that’s lurking on the horizon. They are called the AMEG (Arctic Methane Emergency Group) A derogatory term for these informed scientists is NTE’s (Near Time Extinctionists) No doubt the… Read more »
I certainly appreciate that your wife pointed you in the direction of an article as a belief in your intellectual discernment; if we could all have such mutually beneficial relationships. I will, however, mention that even the seeming remedy for male short-sightedness is a short-sighted view in itself. The general fear we possess in the modern age has more to do with perception and information availability — even when we don’t necessarily want it — combined with modern media’s If It Bleeds It Leads ratings draws through sensationalism. We live in one of the most civilized periods in history. Men… Read more »
I appreciate the overall point of your commentary, but I have some pretty significant issues with your perspective as well as that of the author of the essay you reference. First, the “ignorant short-sighted men” trope is old and highly misguided. I have known many extraordinary men who were visionaries and very much concerned with big-picture and long-term thinking and history has shown that there are an over-abundance of these types of men in human society. I can also attest to the reality that many women I have encountered are completely self-absorbed and can’t see past the next episode of… Read more »
Exactly
You basically just stated the past was full of errors and problems itself, then said that we have to look to it for guidance on today’s issues. What sort of guidance are we supposed to be looking for when looking to the past? I think the author has done a fine job of harking to the past (which are still our current customs, for the most part) and calling for humanity to move forward instead of staying entrenched in this awful state that we’ve been in for far too long. The addition of why this is important to men is… Read more »
Doug,
Thanks for pointing me to this article. I wonder if the men/women point you make is more about your relationship with your wife rather than anything in the Berry article. Berry in no way alludes to what you suggest and I think you’ve done a disservice to both men and women by suggesting this as a gender issue. If anything, it’s a class issue, but that could be argued too.
In any event, however this article found me, I appreciate it, so thanks.
Jason
I love this. When i read the title, it drew me to this, which I posted on my wall a few days ago. it was written by my coach, Dax Moy On this day as you start to awaken to the miracle and wonder of your life, remember, the most important thing you can do is DON’T go back to sleep. As your eyes open and you start to see a life full of possibility and promise, DON’T close your eyes. As your ears start to hear the wondrous music instead of the drone of white noise, DON’T close off… Read more »

Thanks for reading Jennifer! ~Doug
Not quite sure what you mean as to alternative paths. Of course there was the ‘ it’s all the menz fault’ thrown in there (those STUPID men , gumming it all up by trying to provide for their families!) If I read this correctly, you’re calling for a strong central government to show us the way and perhaps distribute what we need to us as they see fit. Ah, the American dream 21st century!
I didn’t read it that way at all, bobbt. I personally take it as a bigger picture for all to see, I just took note that men in general (including myself) will focus on smaller picture things. That does NOT mean things like taking care of your family is an unimportant thing, I meant to say it’s not the ONLY thing we should be mindful of. Also, I am not at all calling for an illuminati-style government to take over. I’m calling for all of us to wake up a bit and help effect change to better the world in… Read more »

You never read the Oil Drum did you?
Eh. So it goes.
I have not, Wet One! Might I ask who wrote it? I’d be happy to give it a read. And thanks for taking the time to read and respond! ~Doug
I don’t think it’s a book– it could be a website:
http://www.theoildrum.com/
Would seem to “fit the bill”, as it were– many of the site’s writing contributors are men.
