My wife and I spent Thursday in Sherman, Texas.
My father taught music here at Austin College for several years, and my brother and I were both born here. We moved to Ohio in 1967 though, and I was only 21 months old at the time. My memories come from old family movies, including a clip of me sledding down the hill next to the house on Dundale in a January 1966 snowstorm.
We drove around to both of the houses my parents owned while they were here, as well as the campus and the former home of Trinity Lutheran Church, where they worshiped. The church was formed in 1956, just three years before my parents were married, and had a strong German tradition, which explains why my father chose it. He was very proud of his German heritage. His home church in Austin still occasionally conducts services in German, and his family commonly spoke it at home in his youth.
I remarked to Diana that even today as a town of some 38,000, Sherman reminded me much of Marietta. Even the Austin College campus brought to mind Marietta College, where Dad taught for 20 years. I’m curious as to the size comparisons of both towns and campuses in 1967.
Many of the old family landmarks are gone, but there’s still plenty of history here.
