DC Comics has nine television shows on the air or in production.
CBS and DC/Warner Bros. recently announced a Supergirl TV series.
Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El was born on Krypton and managed to escape the planet’s destruction. She shares the same powers as her cousin and the same weakness to kryptonite.
Supergirl was played by Helen Slater in the 1984 film, Supergirl, and by Laura Vandervoort in the CW series, Smallville. No word yet on the casting for the new series.
CBS might seem like an odd choice for a superhero series following a 24-year old character, but CBS was the only network without a comic book property.
Gotham premiered on Fox tonight (Sept. 24). The series follows a newly-recruited Detective Jim Gordon who leads the investigation into the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Detective Gordon meets the 12-year old Bruce Wayne and brooding intensity ensues.
Constantine, based on characters from Hellblazer comic book series, premieres on NBC on October 24th. The series follows John Constantine, a magician and con man who becomes a supernatural detective. Keanu Reeves played the character in the 2005 movie of the same name. That characterization bears little resemblance to the source material. For example, the comic book version of John Constantine has facial expressions.
Arrow, which follows a crime-fighting archer, returns for its third season. A spin-off following The Flash premieres at the same time. Both of these shows operate in a shared universe on CW. Also premiering on CW, iZombie follows a teenage zombie as supernatural forces wreak havoc on Eugene, Oregon.
Also, Fox is currently developing a pilot for DC’s Lucifer series. The DC Comics version of The Devil resigns his lordship over hell and opens a piano bar. The character was created by Neil Gaiman for his Sandman series.
Teen Titans and Preacher are also being considered for live-action TV series. DC might not be ready to concede the silver screen to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they’re definitely preparing a more fortified fall-back position.
