With the New Year just around the corner, you may feel inspired to set new goals for becoming financially independent. The truth is that the world is full of people aspiring to be millionaires, but most of them never make it rich. Partly, that’s because they don’t understand that working won’t ever make you rich. Even when you understand that entrepreneurship is your best way out of the rat race, it’s not an easy road to take. Here are some things you must do to go from rags to riches.
Take Risks
Nobody ever learned how to walk without falling. Similarly, nobody can get ahead in life without taking risks and making mistakes. The key is to take those risks early in life when the downside is small. Even successful entrepreneur Tai Lopez started with a lemonade stand, which actually made him more money than merely selling produce for his mother. But even if it hadn’t, it would have taught him a valuable lesson about running his own business.
Schools don’t teach you to take risks. They only reward you for when you get the answer right. In real life, it’s not that simple. You have to be willing to try something different to get ahead. That doesn’t mean you should put everything you own on the line for your next big venture, either. Instead, you must step outside of your comfort zone regularly and start taking small risks as soon as possible.
Set Lifestyle Goals
Most people focus on obtaining a big balance in their bank account and, consequently, chase money. While that may satisfy you in the short term, it probably won’t make you happy for the rest of your life. Even though money can’t buy happiness, it can facilitate experiences that lead to happiness. Therefore, instead of aiming for a certain amount of money in the bank, you should set lifestyle goals.
The upside of setting lifestyle goals is that you won’t face the dilemma of boredom when you have more money than you could ever spend. Another advantage is that you can obtain the lifestyle you want a lot sooner than you can become a millionaire. That’s because most experiences that will make you happy don’t cost that much. For example, many people dream of traveling and seeing the world. You can travel in style by creating your business around that goal. As long as you have internet access, you can even run a huge empire from abroad.
Invest in Yourself
To be the best you can be—in business and in your personal life—you must invest in yourself. In addition to taking care of your body by eating healthy and exercising, you must exercise your mind. While you can blame school for not teaching you how to set up an LLC, write a business plan, or create a statement of cash flows, you can learn how to do these things on your own. It just requires a little bit of your time, because you can get the educational materials for free at your local library. Reading is a great way to expand your mind and think of new possibilities, but you still need to take action, too.
Keep Trying
Don’t give up on your dreams. Most entrepreneurs have lived with failure more than once. In fact, all truly successful people fail, including Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Michael Jordan, and countless others. The reason they’re successful is the fact that they picked themselves up and tried again, and again, and again. Each time they failed, they learned something from their failure. You can do the same.
The road from rags to riches is never an easy one, and is frequently a long one, fraught with obstacles—but the fact remains that there is a road to get there. The only question is, are you determined enough to take that road?
