Sexual harassment is not just confined to politicians. Sexual harassment is defined as “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors” Sexual harassment can be perpetrated by anyone, hence, anyone can be labeled a sexual predator. The term predator is applied when an individual disturbingly appears to hunt prey as animals do. A predator has dangerous behaviors and when rebuffed, refuses to accept that his advances are unwanted. So, just by definition, men, we need to recalibrate ourselves with how we deal with the women around us.
In our defense, sex, however, sells. If you don’t believe it you only have to look at the majority of the ads, not to mention the music videos that are out now. Skimpily clad women seem to be in every scene. Our maleness is exploited every day. In fact, our maleness and our reaction to women is one of the key components of our capitalistic society. There are articles, even marketing classes that tell how to make sex a part of an effective ad campaign.
Yes, sex sells and the unsuspecting buyer is usually unaware that he’s been sold. But here’s the thing, because of all these messages it may be difficult to uncover when the message coming from everyday women around us that they are genuinely interested in us. It can be particularly difficult in the workplace. The challenge is to remain a gentleman in the presence of any woman. Here are a few rules that can help you stay out trouble and not get fired or taken to court:
1. Keep any interactions in the workplace professional. Even if you are outside the workplace but in the company of co-workers, don’t think that this is the time to make advances. Remain professional.
2. Always treat a woman with the respect you would give your mother.
3. Only make advances to a woman who is giving clear signals that they are interested in pursuing conversation and maybe more with you.
4. Understand that a woman can become disinterested in you just as she became interested. When she gives you signals that she is no longer interested, back off.
Today’s world is complicated. The best way to navigate in a world where sex is used to sell products and when the messages and signals are so murky, follow the rules that will help you steer clear of trouble. If you are ever in doubt of what to do or what to say, talking it out with someone is a great way to start.
