Name the feeling first

Ask one curiosity question
Problem:
Conversations feel interrogative or defensive.
Action:
Ask one open question, then stop.
Script:

Why it works:
Preserves autonomy (Bandura), curiosity invites cooperation.
Use when:

Move 4
Mirror a short phrase
Problem:
Conversations stall or someone says something vague.
Action:
Repeat the last 2–4 meaningful words as a question; then pause.
Script:
Them: “I’m burned out.” You: “Burned out?” (pause)
Why it works:
Reflection signals attention and creates space for depth (therapy technique).
Use when:
- Interviews
- Stalled talks
- Emotional comments.

Move 5
Close with a specific acknowledgment
Problem:
Conversations end awkwardly or feel unresolved.
Action:
Close with a short, specific acknowledgment.
Script:
“Thanks for being honest I appreciate that.” / “I’m glad you said that.”
Why it works:
Endings form memory (halo effect) and trigger reciprocity (Cialdini).

- Difficult conversations.

- Prepare (2 minutes):
Choose one move and memorize the exact script.
2. Apply (today):
Use it in one low-stakes interaction (barista, colleague, partner).
3. Reflect (5 minutes): Rate the interaction using the rubric below.
Measurement rubric (after 3 uses)
Rate each interaction 1–5 for:
- Did they speak longer?
- Did their posture relax?
- Did they ask a question back?
- Did you feel less awkward afterward?
