If you live and work in this world, then you likely have a case of computer neck. Here is what you can do about it.
DEAR DR. AUSTIN: What are some easy exercises or tools for relieving “computer neck”? — SLOUCHED
DEAR SLOUCHED: This is becoming a bigger and bigger issue in our society. In fact there’s a good chance you are contributing to it right now, as you read this. Take a moment to see what your posture looks like. Are you on the train or a bus, holding your phone in your lap with your body curled over it? Or at home with a laptop, actually on your lap, or at a desktop with your head 4 inches in front of your shoulders? If so, then the first step is consciousness. Understanding the habits is the best way to correct them. If you spend a lot of time on your phone, try holding it up in front of your face instead of looking down at it. Another great practice is putting the phone in your pocket…that’s right stop using it so much! Create the habit of checking your phone once or twice an hour, instead of being glued to it. Keep your head up, look around, take in the beauty of the world. At home get a laptop stand so you can put it on your desk or table, for desktops, the screen should be arms length away and you need to keep your ears lined up over your shoulders.
