Everyone has bad days, when everything goes wrong, it seems like nothing will go right, and the only thing we want to do is go back to bed and sleep, not before crying, screaming, and blaming everyone around us.
When this happens, I try to follow some steps to change my mind, and thus, alter my reality. If everything is going wrong, I change it so that something goes right. It’s not magic, it’s attitude, and it makes perfect sense.
When our brain focuses only on the negative, we have the impression that our whole life is bad and that we are destined for failure. If we start thinking about good things, we have more pleasurable feelings and start to look at life through this positive lens.
HOW TO TURN A BAD DAY AROUND:
There are a few things you can do to turn a bad day into a good one:
Breathe! — You want to cry, throw a fit, scream, but you can’t. Not at that moment. To get back to center, the first thing to do is stop and take 10 slow, deep breaths. Notice that your heart rate and breathing slow down, and you naturally become calmer. It’s already a first step to improve what’s not good.
Repeat a mantra — It can be any calming phrase. A beautiful option is: “It’s just a bad day, not a bad life.” With this phrase, you become aware that everything passes and that today is not a reflection of who you are. Keep saying this to yourself until it’s true in your heart.
Focus on the solution — Now that you’ve calmed down, it’s time to solve! If something went wrong, there’s no use lamenting. Focus on finding a solution and move on. Besides bringing movement, which is always good, you become more optimistic.
Stop making negative affirmations — Everything we think or say becomes reality, and thus, we can enter a vicious cycle of negativity. Again, focus on the positive, on what has a solution.
Create a new perspective — Don’t just focus on the details. Try to step back and see the situation as a whole, giving proper proportion to everything that happens. Everyone is exposed to bad things. It’s not the universe’s personal vendetta against you.
Pay attention to your body — When we’re in a bad mood, it’s often a reflection of tiredness, sleepiness, or hunger. If we’re not 100%, we’re more likely to make mistakes, break objects, and miss important details. So when everything starts to go wrong, stop and ask yourself: do I need a break? A walk? A good lunch? Sometimes, just stopping and eating a sweet treat can help improve the situation.
Maintain your positive expectations — Just as the negative materializes, the same happens with the positive. Try to keep your optimistic ideas and dreams close by. Turn to them when you’re feeling down.
Be grateful — This is probably the last thing you want to do, but when we thank, we focus our attention on something that went well, that was good. This helps change our pattern.
Cry — At the end of the day, after solving the issues, if you still feel the need, cry! Vent and let out what torments your mind. You will feel great relief and be ready to wake up on the right foot the next day.
Remember: we can all have bad days. The impact this can have on our lives is up to us to decide. Don’t let an incident affect your mood, your relationships, or your work. Try to overcome it as quickly as possible because there are still many good things happening around us!
