EXTERNAL CONTROL
“I know I can change his mind. I am convinced I am the most successful player ever. People have not recognized how great I am yet.”
VERY OFTEN THEY OBSESS
People Want To Control The Uncontrollable: I know I can make him do what I say. I can get her to love me. I will guarantee victory at our next game. I can promise we won’t lose any money on our deals.
How They Address Situations: They really can’t. They just believe they can. I called this “Suffering From Grand Delusion”. The official term of this is “Delusional Disorder”.
Non-Bizarre Delusions Count: This delusional disorder involves delusions which seem reasonable. A reasonable delusion is called a Non Bizarre Delusion because it involves reasonable scenarios. Reasonable scenarios are things which could possibly occur in real life if there was actual evidence to support them.
An example of something reasonable scenario would be: a) the person assumes they are being followed, b) being deceived by nice words, c) loved from a distance or d) are able to close a very difficult business transaction.
What makes it a non-bizarre delusion is it involves the misinterpretation of real events.
In corresponding order: a) the neighbor who always gets coffee at the same spot that the person likes and leaves at the same time due to similar work schedules, b) the greeter at the front desk whose job is to say nice words even if they are insincere, c) the ex who moved on and still sends birthday cards, d) a person who was part of an elite team that closed a huge deal but was only an intern that was randomly assigned to that very successful transaction off happenstance.
THE MINDSET OF DISORDER
Being Delusional minded is:
A person who consistently affirms a reality that they lack evidence to support.
How It Illustrates:
Present Action — “I will win the next game.”
How You Can Address It:
Present Response — “I’m glad you have confidence. You can’t get anywhere without it. Have you started shooting your free throws above 90% yet? Nearly every team who wins consistently does that. Are you below or above the mark?”
What This Action Does:
· Shows you are kind and perceptive to recognize the positive affirmation.
· Demonstrates accountability to the person making the statement.
· Forces the person to start offering evidence to themselves to support their claims.
The Trait Which Will Protect You From This Disorder
Humility. The ability to remember others in lieu of yourself. The courtesy to praise others instead of exalting yourself. The graciousness to remind yourself not everything is controlled by you.
Closing Food For Thought
I was a man who once suffered from this condition. It was complicated by the fact I was actually good at certain things, and exceptional at others. The ability to play professional sports doesn’t translate to all professions. Take care to remind yourself that talent is the ability to do something great with little to no practice. This is not true for everything — only the thing you were blessed with.
Remembrance of this will make you a better father, better husband and a better friend.
