I pulled together this Halloween checklist to make it easy for parents to prepare. But before diving into the practical stuff, I want to highlight the importance of rituals. Research shows that meaningful family rituals can improve marital satisfaction and ease early parenting stress.
We share the same ritual as my friend Paul Sullivan of the Company of Dads: We always make chili for the evening. And I am a chili fanatic. If you’re looking for a great chili recipe, here are my two favorite recipes to choose from:
👻 Trick-or-Treating With Your Kids
Safety First
Stick to well-lit routes, bring flashlights or glow sticks, and add reflective tape to costumes. If your kids are old enough to go alone, make sure they stay in groups and carry their phones.
Smart Costume Planning
My mother dressed me up as an Ewok in the second grade. I remember a school costume competition and being pulled out of line in the school parking lot as the winner. But my mom was the real winner.
Not everyone has the time or resources to do that for their kids, or maybe it’s not a priority. And that’s okay! Money is tight and time is scarce for many families right now. There’s no shame in swapping costumes with a friend. You can always thrift for a vintage option; you might get lucky and find an old Ewok costume!
Candy Strategy
Set expectations before you head out. The kids are excited, so you’ll need to be blunt and clear. Safety first. Kids shouldn’t eat candy before you inspect it. It goes without saying: don’t let the kids eat all the candy at once. Consider trading some of the candy for a toy or book the next morning.
🏡 Preparing to Hand Out Treats at Home
Stock Smart
You don’t have to buy candy, but if you do, buy it now before it’s picked over and hopefully on sale. There are also lots of kids with nut allergies, so I’d stear clear of any candy with nuts in it. Think about options other than candy as well (e.g., stickers, glow bracelets).
Set the Vibe
Create a welcoming (and safe) atmosphere. Keep pathways clear, decorations friendly, and porch lights on. Get the whole family involved: kids love choosing treats to pass out and helping with decorations.
