Something I heard today really got me thinking.
A friend texted me saying she met someone who could heal her. Even though it was just a text message, I could feel her joy through the words. I could even imagine her tears of happiness on the other side of the screen.
Years ago, this same friend went through a betrayal in her relationship. She tried everything to win him back, but he was determined to leave. She suffered through the pain and agony, eventually ending up in a divorce.
Divorce is a huge blow to someone’s heart. Many people who go through it no longer trust love. They even become scared of it, afraid to let themselves feel anything. They fear the hurt of being betrayed again, and they also fear wasting time on someone who doesn’t truly love them.
That’s how my friend felt. She even told herself that she was ready to live alone and be lonely for the rest of her life.
But maybe fate felt it was unfair to her, so it sent another person to heal her, to give her happiness, to help her believe in love and humanity again.
At this moment, I think she probably feels like everything she went through was worth it. If she hadn’t experienced the past, she wouldn’t have this moment today.
We often say that betrayal is unexpected, something that can ruin a person’s happiness forever. But her story shows us that sometimes, what we least expect is an unexpected surprise.
Life is unpredictable. We usually say that when we experience a major life change, and it’s usually not good news. But “unpredictable” doesn’t always mean bad things. It can be good too. You’re walking down the street, fall into a mud pit, and then find a bag of gold in it. Isn’t that unpredictable?
The truth is, many people who go through betrayal find better people after their divorce. They often experience greater happiness in their second marriage because they learned to cherish it more.
But people have a logical flaw: they want to be sure they’ll find someone better before they have the courage to leave the person who’s hurting them. This is impossible. If you keep wearing your old, torn clothes and refuse to throw them away, how can you possibly have the chance to wear new, beautiful clothes? You don’t even have the chance to see what “good” looks like.
Of course, not everyone is “lucky” enough to find a better marriage to make up for the bad one. But if we can look at “unexpected surprises” from a deeper perspective, our vision will suddenly become broader.
The truth is, betrayal is a rare opportunity in life. It’s a chance to change your life and your fate. Of course, no one would ever choose to experience betrayal to change themselves.
Without betrayal, many people would live a very ordinary life. They wouldn’t leave much of a mark on the world. They’d become shadows of others, always revolving around their partner, their kids, their family, sacrificing themselves without ever truly living for themselves.
Some people are timid, some are weak, some are submissive, some are indecisive. But after betrayal, all these flaws are exposed. You can’t hide from them anymore. You have to choose between living a life of humiliation or choosing to change yourself completely.
Even if you’re truly alone from now on, even if you choose to stay in the marriage, your inner self has already been reborn. You just haven’t realized it yet.
For example, before betrayal, you probably thought about your partner all the time. You probably gave them all your good qualities. You probably sacrificed your own feelings just to prove your love.
But now, none of that matters anymore. You understand that you need to live for yourself. You understand that you need to love yourself. You understand that you need to consider your own feelings first. These are all things you gained through the pain of betrayal, things you paid a high price for. And these parts are completely yours. No one can take them away or steal them, unlike love, which is easily trampled and worthless.
Everything you gain for yourself in the end is an unexpected joy, whether it’s a better version of yourself or a better “them”.
