I hate bullies.
I was teased and beaten up a lot as a kid, and it taught me to stand up for myself, but more than that: it taught me to stand up for others. I probably took as many beatings standing up for someone else as I did for standing up for myself.
As an adult, I’ve learned that real toughness is mental, and emotional. Patience, tenacity, and perseverance are infinitely more valuable skills than physical intimidation. That said, I’m more than happy to play the “angry black man” card if someone I care for is hurt or threatened.
The best part? Nothing is more genuinely terrifying than righteous indignation that’s tempered with quiet, fiery resolve.
