It all leads up to the big moment. It just may not end how you expect.
There’s no singing and dancing in Home Depot or a shopping mall. Sorry.
There’s just the path of a couple’s relationship, good and bad. How they meet each other, how they meet the parents, how they fight, what they do with their friends, what they do when they have a moment alone, how they handle tragedy, what happens on a road trip.
You already know how it ends. Now see who is on the other side of the ring.
Did you tear up a little at that moment with his mother? Remember that where gay couple cannot marry, they can be legally denied the right to be with their partners in hospital, legally denied the right to make medical decisions (do the best legal paperwork you can, folks), excluded from some of the hardest and most personal choices a couple ever has to make.
Did you make an ick face at the end? That’s ok. You can be as icked out as you want by two men or two women kissing. Still no reason they shouldn’t be able to make the same commitment to each other, for the same reasons, that an opposite sex couple wants to.
Convinced that these people need to be prayed for for their sinful lifestyle? That’s your choice. Still no reason to keep them from making a legal commitment to each other, with the same rights, that an opposite sex couple wants to.
You don’t have to like it. But that’s no reason to keep it from happening.
Lots of people didn’t like interracial marriage, women being able to own property, or any one of hundreds of other changes that marriage has gone through since it became a contract between two people.
But the world is still turning.
It’s time.
