Over the past two decades we’ve been dealing with one epidemic after another. The opioid addiction epidemic. The loneliness epidemic. The epidemic of rabid partisan hatred. The epidemic of rising racism and misogyny. And, of course, the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.
But there’s another epidemic that’s been building and spreading, stealthily, during this entire period. That’s the stupidity epidemic — and it’s even more dangerous than the others.
It’s more dangerous because it literally affects everything — including how we respond to all the other epidemics as well as challenging social issues.
I don’t think most people are inherently stupid. But we live in a social system that dumbs us down, under-educates us, and makes us stupider and more selfish. The ‘dumbing down’ of America has been intensifying for decades, along with our continued stupid reliance on greedy ‘self-interest’ to (supposedly) guide our nation.
How is that working out for us? Hint: It isn’t.
A widespread cult of ignorance… and a pandemic disaster
As Isaac Asimov noted in his famous 1980 essay A Cult of Ignorance,
The drive to embrace stupidity or even revel in it has no clearer expression than that odious statement “My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” (Another variant is “Ignorant and proud of it!”) Sadly and dangerously for the American people and our nation, that idea has spread far and wide and is now commonplace. It has become one of the foundational concepts underlying our current hateful, divisive ‘reality.’
Over the last decade — coinciding with the ‘reign’ of Don the Con — our simmering dislike of the ‘elites’ and all experts has boiled over into all-out contempt and hate. This became obvious during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, when Trump, his MAGA base, and then the entire GOP all showed withering contempt for public health experts, masking, ‘social distancing,’ and their favorite scapegoat, Dr. Fauci.
To be effective, public health programs require full public participation and acceptance of expert guidance and policies that promote the ‘common good’ of public health. Yet to Trump, MAGA, and the GOP, ALL of these vital public needs ‘steal people’s freedom’ and are just forms of un-American ‘woke’ oppression.
While it’s true that some errors were made in understanding and dealing with COVID-19, our overall public health response would have been quite effective — if right-wing folks hadn’t sabotaged the process. As it actually played out, much of the ‘freedom-loving’ public resisted and undermined our pandemic-fighting efforts — to horrendous effect.
The U.S. suffered a MUCH higher fatality total than any other nation. We suffered 1.2 million deaths, while the next highest total was Brazil’s at about 700,000. In terms of overall disease cases, we had 104+ million while the next highest nation, India, had about 45,000,000.
Think about that: we have 1/4 the population of India, yet we had more than twice as many cases. That is downright bizarre — and frightening. And much of that result was directly due to our insidious belief that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
The rise of devious, stupidity-loving rightwing media
Then there’s the current vast divide between red and blue America. Any objective analysis of right-wing media reveals that ‘conservative’ Americans have been fed a steady diet — for decades — of lies, innuendo, racist ‘dog-whistles,’ right-wing propaganda, and vile anti-democratic myths spouting from the mouths of their demagogic ‘commentators.’
The horrifying result has been that Americans increasingly live in two separate and wildly different ‘realities’ — but only one of these ‘realities’ conforms (mainly) with our actual on-the-ground reality. And it’s not the right-wing media version.
The accelerating ‘dumbing down’ and divisiveness of America and much of the rest of the world is creating massively dangerous consequences. Regarding the U.S. pandemic response, many more people were sickened or died in red counties than in blue counties — and this higher disease and death rate was almost solely due to the pernicious influence of Trump, MAGA, and right-wing media. ALL of these ‘conservative’ forces or personalities encouraged folks to resist masks, vaccines, mandates, and other vital public health measures — thus ensuring a much stupider pandemic response and far worse outcomes. That’s… pure stupidity.
Even worse, it was all for temporary political gain. But the lasting effects of ‘long COVID’ are very real and devastating, and those who died from COVID sure didn’t benefit from their stupid ideological stance and rebellion. At the very least, people need to ‘pick their battles’ wisely and know when to follow expert advice and when it may be OK not to.
But the ideology-driven stupidity of the far right is SO intense and willfully blind that it doesn’t allow for any deviations or exceptions. “You ^&$%@! experts are not going to control ME!”
It’s a damn, screaming shame — and a clear driver of the accelerating stupidity epidemic.
Rampant population and family-planning stupidity
Here’s another telling example: the bipartisan furor over declining birth rates. Many scientists and sociologists, on both sides of the aisle, are moaning about the dangers of a declining birth rate, as if humanity is about to go extinct.
Yet they totally ignore the fact that our global population is still growing by many millions of people each year — around 70 million every year, like clockwork. They also ignore the fact that ever-increasing consumption on the part of ever-growing numbers of people is causing a burgeoning ecological (and soon economic) catastrophe.
In truth, the human population of our planet is far too large, and when this problem merges with our increasing over-consumption of resources, humanity is facing a grave situation: a literal, shocking dead end. But no one wants to deal with these issues in any useful or meaningful way. Instead, many various groups and religions around the world are still pushing for more people and more procreation.
Vast global entities like the Catholic church still oppose all abortion and even oppose contraception. Now the GOP and U.S. ‘conservatives’ are jumping on the anti-contraception bandwagon, and seek to force women to become pregnant and then carry every baby to term and give birth — even when the baby isn’t viable or the mother’s health is at stake. The church, ‘conservatives,’ and even many deluded ‘intellectuals’ are cheering for an ever-increasing human population — all consequences be damned.
These attitudes need to be called out for what they are: rampant, irresponsible stupidity. Humanity, our societies, and the Earth are not suffering because there are too few people, they are suffering under the weight of too many people.
To be clear, I’m not advocating any ‘purge’ of humanity or rooting for a mass die-off. I just wish that many more people would acknowledge reality… and then act accordingly and intelligently. Instead, most people turn a blind eye to our population, ecological, and climate situations and choose to keep procreating like rabbits.
This attitude is just plain stupid and totally unsustainable — yet here we are, acting like utter morons and willfully creating the conditions for our own (and many, many other species’) demise.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Quality education and lifelong learning are critically important
There are many more examples of rampant stupidity that I could cite — but I’m sure you get the idea. The last and crucial thing I want to mention is the gross under-emphasis on quality education in the U.S. Even those who complete high school emerge as total know-nothings when it comes to understanding life essentials like how our government works, how emotions and communication work, how to balance work, play, and family, and how to create an economically-sound lifestyle and avoid major debt.
These days, far too many Americans are in debt up to their eyeballs — and also tend to vote for parties and politicians that support our dysfunctional status quo and push for continued ‘limitless growth.’ But that’s exactly what’s undermining and destroying our society and our personal satisfaction — since nothing is ever ‘good enough’ and we’re always seeking more, more, more.
This is an insane and stupid way to live, and there’s just no excuse anymore for promoting such blatant, destructive BS and lying nonsense. What we should be doing is supporting life-long learning and inner growth, not this endless, unsatisfying quest for endless outer growth and ‘prosperity.’
We should make learning and getting an excellent education our highest priority, and encourage people to keep learning and growing intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. And we desperately need to teach critical thinking and social analysis skills that could help people understand and truly ‘get’ what’s happening in the world around them.
Plus, there’s another crucial element we should be supporting: teaching people empathic, effective ways to relate and communicate with other human beings. We all need help learning good relating and communication skills — for they don’t usually come naturally. We also need steady encouragement to ‘put ourselves in others’ shoes’ and be as loving, kind, and compassionate as possible.
How to undermine our present and destroy our future: keep doing more of the same
But instead, we mainly do the exact opposite. We encourage selfishness, greed, racial or ethnic hatred, and non-compassion. Simultaneously, we encourage mental laziness and utter disregard for facts, truth, and clear thinking. We encourage willful blindness and stupidity, as if ignorance really is bliss.
But ignorance is not bliss, and ignorance and stupidity can — and do — destroy and kill. The human race cannot afford to be this stupid and willfully ignorant, anymore. We and our technologies have gotten far too powerful and our global population has gotten far too enmeshed in addictive, destructive ‘mass consumption.’
In the end, it’s likely that our learned stupidity will be our downfall. The only realistic ‘way out’ of this suicidal dilemma lies in ongoing, consistent, and excellent public education. But as noted earlier, there is little to no political will to move in this direction.
Thus, the worldwide stupidity epidemic keeps growing and intensifying. Thus, the entire planet and all its plants, animals, and people are at the mercy of our overpopulated craziness, greed, and ignorance.
If we can’t or won’t turn this stupidity epidemic around, all hope for a decent, sane, and enjoyable future is truly lost. Simply gone.
[End Note: In a cool synchronicity, Umair Haque just published an essay with the partial title The World of Maximally Possible Stupid (well worth reading, BTW). On the exact day I submitted this essay, yet! It’s fascinating to see the way wild ‘synchronicities’ sometimes show up in our lives.]
